C 1 0 Y � I$M ( , . The buildings which comprise the Peabody Block represent a continuum of moderate scale American commercial architectural styles from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The Block includes two large brick Classic Revival buildings , facing r Washington Street, a Georgian Revival building facing .Essex Street , and two small brick buildings facing Barton Square, one a Renai- other a one-story brick ssance Revival mill-type building, and the _ rominent of these buildings infill structure. The most pare the _ Peabody, Post Office and Gas and Light Buidlings , and an historical study o£ their construction and use indicates their architectural ( � more signifi- prominence and their association with some of Salem' s cant businesses. ! o Post Office Buildingand Hamilton and In 1882, Parsons and Peterson (masonry) Q The U . S. Post Balcomb (woodwork) built the Post Office Building. Office originally occupied the first floor of the building; private offices were located on the two upper stories , and a restaurant was d by fire on December 16 , in the basement . The building was gutte � _ 1895 , but the only exterior damage noted was to the roof. In 193 , the interior was completely altered for Sears Roebuck Company. The first floor was lowered two feet to street level , and a covered I structed at the Peabody Building ' s second floor to walkway was con the Peabody and join the buildings. The one-story structure between Post Office Buildings was also constructed at this time , to be occu- � � •= pied by a barber shop, formerly located in the building ' s basement . �- � — was added to the building .
