On a motion made and seconded, the Commission unanimously voted to deny the demolition in concept. The Commission is not favorable to entertaining an application for such demolition due to the age and significance of the building and the adverse impact it would have on the surrounding neighborhood. Such demolition would not be historically appropriate and would go against the Commission's guidelines which recommend the retention of historic fabric. We have found this group to be committed to doing historically and architecturally sensitive work, particularly in their current project to restore the building's slate roof. Brookhouse Home, the former Benjamin Crowninshield House, is one of the Derby Street Local Historic District's most significant structures. Given the financial limitations of the Home and the many hours of volunteer effort by the Brookhouse Board to maintain • this building, we feel that this is the kind of project the Preservation Projects Fund was designed to support. The Salem Historical Commission hopes that MHC will respond favorably to this application. Sincerely, / Annie C. The Brookhouse Board serves as a steward of this important structure, located in the Derby Street National Register District. Formerly known as the Benjamin Crowninshield House, its original owner was a member of a prominent local merchant family, a U.S. Congressman, and later Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Madison and Monroe. This building is perhaps the finest Federal period mansion remaining along the waterfront. Not only is the Brookhouse Home historically and architecturally significanct, but also its present owners are committed to preserving it in a sensitive manner. They have gone as far as they can with their own financial resources in restoring the roof and will not be able to complete this project without assistance from MHC. I believe that the Building Committee has the commitment to carry out all the requirements that this grant would entail. For these reasons, I encourage MHC to fund the Brookhouse Home in their second attempt to obtain a Preservation Projects Fund Grant. >: Sincerely, I Debra Hil ert 'r Preservation Planner t I i 4,t m) JO ie eni Historical Commission ONE SALEM GREEN, SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS 01970 744-4580 November 20, 1986 Ms. Elsa Fitzgerald Grants Director Massachusetts Historical Commission 80 Bolyston Street Boston, MA 02116 Dear Ms. Fitzgerald: At its November 19, 1986 meeting, the Historical Commission reviewed and voted to support the proposed application by the Brookhouse Home for Aged Women, 180 Derby Street, to the Massachusetts Preservation 'Projects Fund. This structure, which is located in both a local historic district and a National Register District, possesses historical and architectural significance. A fine example of the Federal style, the Brookhouse Home was built in 1810-1812 for Benjamin W. Crowninshield, a member of a prominent Salem merchant family, a U. S. congressman, and Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Madison and Monroe. The house also has associations with Samuel McIntire, Salem's . well—known carpenter—builder. For the past year, the Salem Historical Commission has been aware of the physical problems facing this building. Last June we reviewed the Home ' s reroofing plans, for the west side of the structure. Because of the building' s individual significance and importance in the district, the Commission required that this work be done in slate. The Home now faces a prohibitive cost to reroof the remainder of the front section of the house where the slates are badly delaminated. We hope that the Massachusetts Historical Commission will favorably review this application so that the Brookhouse Home can maintain its building according to the best preservation standards. s Sincerely, G wxie C . /" Annie C. Harris Chairperson T T Salem Historical Commission CITY HALL. SALEM. MASS. 01970 744-4580 December 2, 1985 Ms. Elsa Fitzgerald Grants Director Massachusetts Historical Commission 80 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02116 Dear Ms. Fitzgerald: At its .Nbvember 20, 1985 meeting, the Salem Historical Commission reviewed an application to the Preservation Projects Fund on behalf of the Brookhouse Home for Aged Women at 180 Derby St. This structure, which is located in the Derby St. National Register District, possesses both historical and architec- tural significance. The original section of the building is a three-story Federal brick mansion built between 1810 and 1812. Its first owner was Benjamin W. Crowninshield, a member of a prominent Salem merchant family, a U. S. Congress- man, and Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Madison and Monroe. Architectural historian Fiske Kimball believes that Samuel McIntire may have planned the house just before his death in 1811 and it is likely that McIntire's son carved the interior woodwork. In 1861, the structure became the Brookhouse Home for Aged Women and has been used continuously for that purpose since that time. Because the Home is operated by a non-profit organization, funds with which to maintain the building are limited. The structure requires complete repointing and the trustees would like to replace the shutters which once stood on the front facade. The Historical Commission feels that Brookhouse merits assistance from the Preservation Projects Fund as a non-profit organization of limited means responsible for the stewardship of an important historic structure. Repointing this building is a major undertaking and one for which Brookhouse does not have adequate financial resources. Therefore, the Historical Commission endorses this application and hopes that it will be favorably reviewed by the MHC. Sincerely, r •vw, Annie C.
