BUILDING FORM 140 Derby Street ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION See continuation sheet. Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This 2-story, rectangular, 2 x 3 bay, side-entry, gable-front house has a secondary entrance on the west elevation near the facade corner. Although the eaves are close, a heavy eave molding with returns trims the roof line of the facade. Late 20th century alterations include detailing at the main entry, now comprised of narrow, fluted pilasters supporting a lintel with a low-relief dentil motif, and the installation of a large, double casement window with a narrow, plain window trim to the right of the main entrance. Other fenestration consists of 2/2, double-hung sash. Most windows have plain trim, but window frames on the second level of the facade are molded, likely applied at the time the house was shingled. Window frames on the sides are plain. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE X See continuation sheet. Discuss the history of the builcing. Explain its assoc'ations with local (or state history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. Conflicting information presented by local maps and directories leaves unresolved the history of this house and largely all the property between 136 and 146 Derby Street. McIntyre's Map of Salem is the earliest nineteenth century map to identify owners, but fails to attribute this group of structures. Title searches on the various properties are required to provide more conclusive information. Comparing local maps and directories the number assigned to this building in 1874 (88 Derby Street) was switched to the nearby property 138 Derby Street by 1890 when this house became 90 Derby Street. In 1895, both acquired their present addresses. To add to the confusion, the family listed at 88 Derby Street spans the change in street numbers and a subsequent change on 1895/96 to the current street number 138 Derby Street. A title search is necessary have help resolve whether the family coincidentally moved next door at the same time the street numbers were altered or if the maps had been incorrectly marked. In 1874, the owner for this property recorded as 88 Derby Street is listed as Mrs. Brickley. Honora Bickley is recorded at 88 Derby Street from that time to her death on March 17, 1888. In 1890, by which date we know the street number had been changed to 90 Derby Street, Patrick Brickley and Michael Hoar, both previously listed at 88 Derby Street, remain listed in the directory at 88 Derby Street which became 138 Derby Street in 1895. On 1897 atlas, this property is attributed to G. L. Ames who is not listed in the local directories as a resident of Salem. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES X See continuation sheet. T' INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET Salem 140 Derby Street Area HO Form No. 2600 HISTORICAL NARRATIVE (continued) In 1890-91, occupants associated with "90 Derby Street" are Irish laborers, Timothy Murphy and Thomas Dacey. A fairly-rapid turnover of residents, consistently comprised of apparently 2, separate families followed. Most continued to be Irish workmen, tailors, mill operatives, teamsters and their housewives. On the 1911 map of Salem, 140 Derby Street along with all the properties from 136 to 146 Derby Street are attributed to the Daniel A. Varney, Trust. Daniel A. Varney lived without occupation at 31 Pleasant Street. In 1912, a transition to Eastern European tenants with similar trades, occurred reflecting changes in the neighborhood. It appears commercial space was incorporated into the building around 1920. Initially it still housed 2 families. The first indication is the occupancy of Katie and Stanislaw Ambrozy. The latter was a tailor who both lived and worked out of this building and shared residency with Beckey and Morris Cushen who is listed without occupation. Ambrozy was followed by another tailor. Between 1924 and 1930, the sole occupant was commercial: a lunch room, run in 1924 by Mary Luzinski and in 1926 by Adam Dobrozielski and c. 1930, a shoe repair shop operated by Stanislaus Swiniarski. All lived elsewhere. In 1931, listings for a separate store and residence are specified in the directory. The residential occupant between 1931 and at least 1945 was Mrs. Mary E. Pasternak, a widow listed without occupation. The store seems to have been vacant except c. 1940 when Stephen L. Maga operated a restaurant, but lived elsewhere.
