Proposal:
Replace 3-tab asphalt shingle roof with architectural shingle roof.
Staff Comments:
The applicant is seeking to replace the existing 3-tab asphalt shingles with architectural shingles. He is proposing to use either:
• Owen Corning Duration architectural shingles in"Teak",or
• IKO Cambridge architectural shingles in"Weatherwood"
This house features a front gable roof that is highly visible from Derby Street The existing roof is a brown 3-tab asphalt shingle.
The applicant is seeking to install an architectural shingle roof in brown to match the color of the existing roof. The contractor
Staff Memo to Historical Commission-October26,2017

selected two options for architectural shingles based on the square cut of the shingle in recognition of the Commission's
Guidelines which state that architectural shingles cut on an angle are not appropriate and are unlikely to be approved. Of the two
options, the IKO appears to have the straightest cut. The applicant has submitted brochures for both shingles, which will be
available at the meeting.Typically the Commission requests that roof shingles be in a dark color, either black or charcoal gray.A
darker color may aid in minimizing the visual appearance of the architectural shingle, although the existing brown shingle roo'is
very similar to the tan color of the building's vinyl siding.
To date, the Commission has not approved an Owens Corning roof shingle(this may be the first request). According to:he
property tiles, the Commission has approved IKO Cambridge shingles for the following properties:
127 Derby Street in 2010
40 Derby Street in Dual Black
315-317 Essex Street
174 Federal Street(roof noted as m.nimally visible).
In the past,Kathy Harper expressed concern about IKO shingles. A class action lawsuit was filed by customers who stated.hat the
shingles failed prematurely(after only 6 years instead of 30 year warranty).According to online information, this suit was settled
in 2017.
