Dear Sir/Madam,
I have owned and lived in the home at 41 Chestnut Street for 20 years. My property is directly
across the street from the Randalls' at 49 Chestnut, and as such I am probably more likely than
anyone else to see the changes they propose to make to their fence and garden area to create
parking for their home. I support their proposed changes as being in keeping with the character
of the house and the neighborhood, and with the manner in which others on the street have
created parking for their homes. Their plan is designed such that, once the changes are made,
the property will appear to have been maintained that way for many years.
Furthermore, the proposed changes will bring their property into compliance with building codes
which would require the creation of parking with the construction of a home, and help relieve a
parking shortage at this end of Chestnut brought on by the use of Chestnut for parking by
residents of Essex Street and Flint Street, and by visitors to Grace Church and the Salem Public
Library.
As a long time owner of historic homes, I am strongly committed to their preservation. As the
broker/owner of Seaport Realty in Salem, I am active in the sale of historic homes, and
understand through experience that in order to attract homeowners who are willing to take on the
burden of maintaining them, it is sometimes necessary to small concessions to the realities of
modern life. I believe the relatively minor changes to fencing, gates, and landscaping the
Randalls are proposing is a small price to pay to ensure that these wonderful houses will
continue to attract appreciative owrers.
Kindly support the Randalls in making these improvements to their property.
