But Marshall happened to be sitting near Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns, cohosts of the DIY network show "Indoors Out." "They were talking about how they share an agent with Ray Bourque," Marshall recalls. "Because of that I assumed that one of them played for the Bruins, so we started talking." Even though the pair don't play for the Bruins, Marshall still hit it off with Marsico and Stearns, and they invited him to stop by and watch them film their show, the premise of which is expanding small homes by creating outdoor living areas. Three weeks later, he got a call from the duo asking if Marshall was interested in a backyard makeover of his own. "I don't have one of the homes that they typically work on, like country music stars or some big shots," Marshall says. "My wife was kind of iffy about it." The family agreed, however, and for three days, "Indoors Out" descended on Marshall's backyard to turn it from a grassy stretch into an area where he, his wife, and his four children can relax and mingle with friends. The family of six lives in an 1,800-square-foot home, and with a steady stream of neighborhood kids and friends dropping in, any additional space is welcome. The Gloucester yard makeover will air on Oct. 19 at 10 p.m. We followed Marshall through his backyard reality TV renovation. In three days, "Inside Out" planned to install a patio, fire pit, gazebo, an arbor, and beef up Marshall's backyard vegetation. Marshall paid for labor, but most materials were donated. In his own words, here's a look at how he survived a hectic filming schedule and a nonstop string of practical jokes. Day one "They started about 7:15 this morning filming the 'before' shots," Marshall said. "My wife had to leave the house, because this is a gift to her, so we'll surprise her at the end. I have some friends who are on the TV show 'The Deadliest Catch,' and they showed up to help. Captain Andy [Hillstrand of the boat Time Bandit] drove the excavator, and his brother John showed up as a surprise. We shoveled dirt, we shoveled gravel, and we attacked John with water balloons. There's a lot of horseplay with those guys. You never know what's coming at you. They throw rocks at each other. They trip each other. If someone's not getting hurt, they're not laughing. It's kind of sadistic. "So far it seems very under control and calm. I actually thought it was going to be a God awful experience. I was afraid it would be a bunch of egotistical people here. But it's not about them. They make you extremely comfortable. So far all the work has gone smoothly, and there was a bit of excitement around here with the Time Bandit guys bouncing around." Day two "Most of the day was fantastic. There was one problem this morning. I was going to have an irrigation system put in, but the company that was going to install it pulled out at the last minute, which means no irrigation system. The patio is now really taking shape, and the paving company is fantastic. The part of the project that I'm most excited about is the fire pit. It's really a combination fire pit and grill. It's like a Lego kit, and I helped http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/house/articles/2009/08/20/indoors out team transforms ... 8/25/2009 `Indoors Out' team transforms a Gloucester backyard -The Boston Globe Page 2 of 2 put it together. "The gazebo installers were here and they got it up and screened in. It's really taking shape. The neighbors are all peeking over and are all pretty surprised at how the yard is looking. There's still a lot to do. They have to finish the sitting wall near the fire pit, the electrician needs to place some outlets in the gazebo. They also have to do all the planting. They have to assemble the patio equipment, and make the walkway to the grill. I think they can pull it off. "The 'Deadliest Catch' guys are supposed to be here to lend a hand, but they're goofing around pretty much all the time. I walked by the deck, and they poured a trash barrel of water over my head. It's definitely a distraction. Fun, but a distraction." Day three "Dressing the set was fun to watch. They let me pick things out that I liked at Lowe's. I'm really surprised that what I picked worked really well. Everyone was joking that I have too good of an eye. I think they felt a little threatened. The whole thing ended up looking terrific. My wife was really surprised. "Everything came together according to the plan: the gazebo, the fire pit, the patio. There was never a big sense of urgency about the time on the last day. We weren't done two hours early, but we definitely weren't scrambling. It was a nice comfortable pace. I'm thrilled with the whole thing and really amazed that all the local contractors who worked on this pulled it off. I'd expect the TV guys to work on that kind of schedule, but everybody managed, and it's phenomenal." ■ ©Copyright 2009 The New York Times Company http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/house/articles/2009/08/20/indoors out team_transforms_... 8/25/2009 HANDY:ad, Revision: 2-12-07 NOME Sao San Marino Run: PROD T Hum It's Easy. . .
