BUILDING FORM 9 Cambridge St., Salem
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION _ see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings
within the community.
9 Cambridge St. is a 2 1/2-story, three-bay Dutch Colonial Revival/Shingle style dwelling with an
asphalt shingled gambrel roof. It rises from a granite foundation, and is clad in wood shingles. A
two-story, flat-roofed ell extends to the rear at the northeast corner. Set with gambrel end to the
street, the house has a recessed entry at the northwest corner, where the small integral porch has a
Doric post and wooden balustrade. The door is paneled with multiple lights. Windows are 9/1 at the
first story, 12/2 at the second story, and paired 6/6 at the attic. Other features include a closed
gambrel end.
i
Features reflecting the Shingle style influence include the use of wood shingles, the flared wall at the
base of the second story on the north and south elevations, and the varied window configurations.
At the south elevation there is a first-story bay rising to a shed dormer at the second story;a smaller
shed dormer exists to the west. A shed dormer also exists at the north elevation. The chimney has a
slightly corbelled cap. The house is set dire-tly on the street on its small lot, with a driveway along
the south side, and a small rear yard. This house is one of few of its style and period in the district,
although other fine examples can be found elsewhere in Salem.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE _ see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses
of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
Like most of the turn-of-the-century residences interspersed in the McIntire District, the David Coggin
House was constructed on the site of an earlier building. The land was a small part of the property
owned in 1666 by Jonathan Neale, whose house was nearby on Broad Street. Cambridge Street
existed as a lane by the late seventeenth century. In 1799 this lot was owned by Benjamin and David
Neal, who built a house on it. The house remained in the Neal family until 1881, when tax records
described it as vacant and about to be demclished.
Late in 1889 David Coggin, an opthalmic surgeon, purchased this lot from Neal heirs, and applied for
a building permit. Coggin lived nearby at 7 Chestnut Street, and apparently never occupied the
house. He was born in Westhampton, Massachusetts, received his M.D. from Harvard Medical
School (1868), and an A.M. from Dartmouth College (1873). After practicing in Hingham and St.
Louis, he settled in Salem in 1874 and became one of the original staff members of the Salem Hospital.
In 1890 Coggin sold 9 Cambridge Street to _eather dealer Nathan Osgood and his wife Eliza. The
Osgoods were the first occupants of the house. According to the Historic Salem Inc. house report,
"Nathan Cook Osgood, son of the artist Charles Osgood, was born in Salem on August 24, 1857. He
was educated in the public schools of Salem, and for many years was in the sole leather business in
Boston, as a member of the firm of Osgood-Hungerford company on Congress Street." The Osgoods
moved to 15 Chestnut Street in 1900, renting the house to George B. and Mary (Creamer) Ives, who
resided there until about 1905 when they moved to 4 Broad Street. Tenancies were brief during the
next years, with tenants including Charles H. Parker;Mrs. Annie Sweet, widow; Dr. Francis B.
Carleton, physician; William A. Purbeck, tailor;Edwin McKinnon, tailor, and Charles C. Buff um,
"famous old fox-hunter." The house has changed owners a number of times during the twentieth
century, and appears to have been a single-family residence during all or most of that time.

NOTICE OF DENIAL OF APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF
NON-APPLICABILITY
RE: 9 Cambridge Street
On Wednesday, October 17, 1990, the Salem Historical
Commission unanimously denied an application for a Certificate of
Non-applicability from Michael and Ann Tomsho for their property
at 9 Cambridge Street regarding the replacement of the roof . The
application was denied due to the work constituting a change from
what is existing and therefore would necessitate review under an
application for Certificate of Appropriateness . I attest that
this is an accurate record of the vote taken, not amended or
modified in any way to this date.
