Workmen's Compensation shall also be carried on all employees on the site. 1.4 The Owner will provide electricity and water to the as required during the work. 1.5 All work shall be done in a professional and workmen like manner. Materials and equipment shall comply with the contract requirements and industry standards. 1.6 All work shall be done per the drawings and specifications. Any deviations or changes in scope shall be made only with the consent of the owner, and dev ations in the contract price shall be submitted as change orders and shall be signed by both the general contractor and the owner before proceeding with the portion of the work in question. 1.7 The Contractor and his subs shall visit the site and familiarize themselves with it. All existing conditions shall be verified before preceding with the effected portion of the work and any deviations shall be brought to the immediate attention of the owner or his representative. 1.8 The Contractor shall submit material samples as required at the request of the owner before ordering materials. 1.9 The Contractor shall keep the site clean and shall pick up all debris each day, and organize his equipment and materials. 1.10 At the completion of all work the Contractor shall be responsible for removal of all excess materials, equipment, and construction debris, leaving the premises in clean, liveable condition. 1.11 The Contractor shall be responsible to remedy all workmanship related defects which may be discovered or arise within one year of the project completior date, and will provide the owner with all material and machinery warrantees as may be obtained. 1.12 The contractor shall perform all items of work indicated on the drawings. SECTION 2 - SITE WORK 2.1 Remove and stockpile obstructions as directed by the owner. Protect shrubbery and structures in vicinity of work. Open gate or carefully remove and store fence section to permit vehicular access to work area. 2.2 Stakeout limits of construction with reference to existing structure. Establish level and plan survey lines for dimensional control. 2.3 Remove existing shrubbery and sod which is in the way of the work and, at the discretion of the owner, either store for future use or dispose of offsite. 2.4 Perform excavation as required for work shown on the drawings which requires excavation. Verify before starting excavation that no buried utilities or tanks lie beneath the ground which can be disturbed by the operations. Exercise care when working adjacent to existing rubble foundations so as not to damage the dry Iain rubble walls with the excavator. Phase excavations with masonry repair if deemed necessary by the structural engineer based upon his inspection. 2.5 Remove at least the top 6" of soil in the area of excavation ans stock pile as topsoil on site. Separate topsoil and inorganic soil and store at different locations for backfilling. 2.6 Filling along and around new foundations may be done with existing soil materials if can be compacted. Otherwise, use structural fill. Spread and compact structural fill to within 6" of new finished grade in 6" lifts. Compact structural fill within 95% of it maximum dry density, using a hand rammer or mechanical tamper as required. 2.7 Structural fill if required shall meet the following gradation requ rements: Sieve Size: Total % Passing by Weight: 3" 100% 55% - 85% #4 40% - 75% #50 8% - 29% #200 0 - 8% Structural fill shall have an angle of internal friction of at leas. 34 degrees, and shall be considered "free draining". 2.8 Provide topsoil from stockpile and any additional topsoil from offsite and spread to a 6" depth over the compacted structural fill to achieve the final required grades. PAGE 2 STRUCTURES NORTH 38 BROAD STREET SEPTEMBER 8, 1997 SALEM, MA 2.9 Slope surface grade away from house and garage foundation at at least a 2% slope (1/4" per foot). 2.10 Contractor shall dewater as necessary to keep footing excavations dry. SECTION 3 -CONCRETE 3.1 Concrete shall reach a minimum compressive strength of 3,000 psi at 28 days. 3.2 Reinforcing steel shall be ASTM A615, Grade 60, Welded Wire Fabric shall be ASTM A185. 3.3 Bearing surfaces of footings shall have a safe capacity of at least one ton per square foot and shall be undisturbed, virgin, coarse granular material. 3.4 Contractor may add 6" thick leveling pads over ledge to ease formwork placement. 3.5 Provide 2"x4" nominal keyway in top of wall footings centered beneath walls. 3.6 Step bottoms of footings where in contact with existing foundations down to same elevation as existing. 3.7 Provide standard galvanized supports and/or anchors set in piers and walls as manufactured Simpson Strong-Tie, or equivalent for support and anchorage of wood framing. SECTION 4 - METALS 4.1 Provide all necessary standard galvanized or electroplated metal framing connectors, whether specified or not. Unspecified connectors shall be industry standard such as is manufactured by Simpson Strong-Tie, or equivalent, and shall be sized for the specific application. 4.2 Provide Y2"dia. X 12" Ig. galvanized or electroplated anchor bolts between all new sills and post bases and the cast-in-place concrete foundations. SECTION 5 -WOOD & PLASTICS 5.1 Rough Carpentry Materials Framing: Hem Fir#2 KD or SPF#1 KD, size as noted. Sills: (2) 2x6 SYP #2 Pressure Treated where bearing on masonry or concrete. Wall Sheathing: 3/4" CDX plywood. PAGE 3 STRUCTURES NORTH 38 BROAD STREET SEPTEMBER 8, 1997 SALEM, MA Roof Sheathing: 5/8" CDX plywood to new work, or 3/4" CDX where matching existing. 5.2 Provide standard framing connectors suitable for all flush framed applications, unless otherwise noted. All nailing shall be per Massachusetts Building Code Appendix C or Article 34. Provide an approved metal post base at the exterior entry column to elevate the post 1" from the slab. Bolt sills to foundations with 1/2' dia. bolts at 24" o.c. 5.3 Provide hurricane clips at all rafter and/or ceiling joist to supporting beam connections at all leading roof edges, and post caps or strap ties between porch roof beams, floor beams, and posts. 5.4 Fasten new framing to the existing structure with two 5/8" dia lag screws (1t.,1b.) with 3 %' minimum penetration to existing structure at each stud. Lead holes shall be 7/16" dia. and holes in outside members shall be 5/8" dia. New bolted nailer members shall be kiln dried. 5.5 Elevate new floor structure which is contiguous to existing first floor structure 1/8" to account for differential shrinkage in new wood. 5.6 Provide multiple wall studs at all multiple member loads on new construction, aligning vertically (ie: at least (2)2x4 below (2)2x8, etc.). 5.7 Provide additional framing an/or blocking as may be required for continuous and solid transfer of all post loads to foundation. Provide "cripples" as required. 5.8 Existing studs shall always be braced on at least one side during work. Do not strip sheathing and/or interior finishes from both sides simultaneously. 5.9 Lap-join collar ties to rafters with 6-10d nails (3 from ea. side), distributed evenly between extreme ends of lap lengths. 5.10 Pre-drilled lead holes for nails where required to prevent splitting shall be 75% of the nails' diameters. 5.11 Remove roofing and siding down to sheathing where new work to be joined. 5.12 Engineer shall be given five working days to submit details required by existing conditions and shall be notified 5 days in advance of exposure to arrange for inspection. 5.13 Contractor shall notify Architect of any and all suspect framing conditions, beetle or ant damage, and/or signs of distress. 5.14 Headers and beams shall be braced against rotation at all posts by continuous studs running to floor or roof above, or by bridging or blocking. 5.15 Provide at least 4-16d toe-nails at rafter ends or rafter supporting studs to top bottom plate and into plywood deck. 5.16 Shore and brace structure during work as required for continuous support of loads, stability PAGE STRUCTURES NORTH 38 BROAD STREET SEPTEMBER 8, 1997 SALEM, MA of structure, and to minimize deflections. 5.17 Inspect and repair existing porch, removing and replacing all unsound wood with equivalent lumber. 5.18 Finish Carpentry Materials Painted Interior Trim: Clear Pine or poplar w/ 10% max moisture content. Unpainted Misc. Interior Trim: Clear pine, unless otherwise noted, w/ 10% max moisture content. Exterior Trim: Flat Boards, standard millwork to be #2 Pine w/ 10% max moisture content. Custom millwork to be cedar or mahogany. 5.19 Painting Paint all wood to suit owner. Provide 1 coat of oil based primer and one coat of finished oil based alkyd enamel on all trim. Provide 1 coat of oil based primer and two coats of latex based stain on all non- trim "field" wood. Back prime all exterior trim. Seal all knots w/ Parks Sealer or Equvalent. Color to suit owner.
