Tewksbury Industries, Inc. proposes to erect fencing along the southern boundary of the Universal
Steel and Trading Company property at 299 Bridge Street that borders the McIntire historic district.
Tewksbury Industries acquired the Universal Steel and Trading Company just over one year ago.
Environmental surveys have identified limited areas of contamination from past operations.
Because some contamination was discovered on the private properties abutting the southern
boundary of the Universal Steel yard, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection
has required that Tewksbury Industries erect fencing as shown on the attached figure. The fencing
must be installed along the northern and western sides of the property at 92 Federal Street to the
western side of the property at 102 Federal Street. The fence will extend:
• approximately 30 feet south from the western side of the Universal Steel building
abutting 102 Federal Street
• approximately 60 feet south from the Universal Steel fence line along the eastern
side of the property at I Federal Street, and
°Ic}'
• approximately 60 feetalong the northern boundary of the property at 92 Federal
Street where it abuts the Universal Steel property.
The abutting properties involved in this project are: 92, 94, 100, and 102 Federal Street.
The purpose of the fencing is to prevent public access to the area of contamination along the
southern boundary of the Universal Steel property. Tewksbury Industries will be conducting
sampling and environmental cleanup activities in this area to identify and remove contaminants.
These activities are expected to take approximately one year to complete. The temporary fencing
will be removed on or before August 1, 1996.
