A 0 New Stairs B Alexander Marks and Kimberly Tompkins, 7 Botts Ct Salem Historical Commission —Application for Certificate of Appropriateness The new stairs will be made of the same type and size of cedar slats used for porch. This is more appropriate in terms of matching and drainage than the current boards used for the stairs. The new stairs will have a lower riser by one inch (7" rather than 8").This is because the current steps were made a little on the steep side in order to reach the ground before the street edge. The bottom step will be a concrete slab similar to the current one. Once the current stairs are removed, the bottom step slab will be removed as well. We will keep the space as a garden bed for plantings (probably a bush). Also, the porch will need to be extended by 2 or 3 cedar slats so that the new railing will line up properly with the house. This means the corner post that supports the porch will be move an estimated six inches closer to the street. A new section of fence will be installed using the same materials as the gate and fence on side of property (see "B" in photo)—as well as the same height. Where the new fence meets the house is close to the access panel on the heatpump unit. We will install a lattice access panel at the same height as the fence that will sit within the fence framing. The landing at base of new stairs will be brick. The new stairs will partially block a window to the basement floor. We will have mason remove the window (and frame) and use brick to fill in the space. Project: painting exterior The mariner Jonas Adams built our home in 1740 - not in its current location but at 339 Essex Street, the site of the Salem Athenaeum.Apparently, it was a tavern for a while, called "Sign of the Eagle."The house was then moved to its current site on Botts Court around 1860. We are excited to refresh 7 Botts Court in a way that both honors its long history and enhances its present day appeal within the neighborhood. Our color choices are largely consistent with most of Salem's historical periods, including the 19th century variations of lighter trim and darker shutters.Taken together,we feel these improvements will emphasize the home's historic attributes and preserve its health for many years to come. Historical Commission 7 Botts court new colors I am an abutter to 7 Botts court Although I have no objection to the proposed clapboard and trim color I do have serious concern about the Shutter color and especially the bronze storm windows. Bronze seems to me to be out of character with the surrounding neighborhood. If the shutters were a different color I think that the clapboard and trim color would look good with the typical white storm windows. Botts court is a unique environment even given the specialness of the McIntire District. It deserves a careful professional assessment. Replacing what was once wood shakes with new wood clapboards would constitute a change per the Commission's guidelines. I will speak with the Chair of the Commission to ask for her guidance on this situation since you have already removed the siding based on the mistakenly issued building permit and the building is now without siding. I will let you know if the clapboards will require review through the public hearing process. As I mentioned this morning, the next Commission meeting for which you could be schedule would be August 17th. Please submit your Certificate of Appropriateness application and supporting materials by August 1". If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 978/619-5685. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the community. The house at 4 South Pine Street is a 1 1/2-story, Cape Cod-style dwelling which is sheathed uh wood shingles and rests on a concrete foundation. A brick chimney rises from the rear slope of the asphalt-shingled roof, near the north end. The offcenter entrance contains a wooden door with four lower panels and four integral transom lights at the top. There is an individual 8/8 window to one side and a pair of 8/8 windows on the other. The side elevations exhibit close eaves and there is a single-story, flat-roofed projection extending to the north. The house is setback from the sidewalk by a small grassy yard, outlined by a chain link fence. A paved driveway extends to the south of the house. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. i Directories indicate that this residence was constructed for Mrs. Mary Ayers in 1958. Mrs. Ayers, widow of Everett, worked as an assembler at General Electric. The house to the rear(4R S.Pine)was constructed by Mrs. Ayers in the early 1960s and she moved there shortly thereafter.
