Staff Memo to SHC

At the last Commission meeting the following was discussed:
Applicant found cornerboards but no watertable. Cornerboards are in good condition, not sure whether house origiially
had weatherboards(water table)that were removed.
Applicant presented revised drawings of entry hood with a flat shed roof and a sample of Azek. I have asked applicant to
send me email version that I can distribute before rreeting.
• Size of transom windows and whether windows snould be divided or single
• Canopy should have a flat or low shed roof, not gabled
• Position of the canopy as it relates to transom windows
Notes taken directly from meeting:
Ms. Herbert suggested a more simple entry hood design instead of the projecting hood with brackets to be more in
keeping with simple design of the house.
Mr. Botwinick stated that his designer was envisioning simple design with shed roof and simple brackets, but projecting
hood needed to protect residents from the weather since this is mail will be located. Projecting entry hood would also
break up long facade.A Brosco bracket will be used.
Ms. Bellin asked whether details should be added to sides of door similar to 92 Federal Street.
Mr. Botwinick stated that doors are proposed to have broad 1 x 10'trim board.
Mr. Cutting suggested that adding weatherboard would add definition.
Mr. Botwinick asked if the weatherboard should be painted to match trim
The Commission discussed the use of transom windows.
Ms. Kelleher noted that the 1978 inventory form for the bjilding includes photo showing original transom windows .
Mr. Botwinick stated that he will be installing wider doors to match original opening which would match width of
transom. Doors were probably 34", now 32" wide.
Ms. Bellin expressed concern that proposed transoms seem very tall.
Mr. Cutting suggested bringing the hood down over transom to minimize appearance of height.
Mr. Botwinick asked if the Commission would prefer pilasters on sides and between doors, which would tie in well if
watertable was added and blocks added to base of pilaste-.
Mr. Cutting asked if pilasters should be fluted.
Applicant and Commission agreed that flat pilasters are best.
Ms. Herbert questioned if moulding could reduce appeara-iceof height of transom.
Staff Memo to SHC
1-2 Griffin Place
Mr. Botwinick asked if Commission could give some leeway for transom design.
Ms. Harper noted that there is evidence of the original transom windows.
Ms. Herbert asked if transom would be operable
Mr. Botwinick stated that they would be fixed.
Commission agreed not to lower hood over transom.
Commission a-id Applicant agreed that watertable should be 1 x 10 and/or 2 exposures of clapboards.

BUILDING FORM 1-2 Griffin Place, Salem
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION _ see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms ofother buildings within the
community.
1-2 Griffin Place was a modest Victorian building that has been altered Set in a courtyard behind 165 Federal
Street it is a two-story double house on a rectangular plan with its facade facing north. Eight bays wide by
approximately four bays deep, it has a flat roof pierced by one chimney at each end A brick stoop with iron hand
rails leads to side-by-side modern front doors occupying the two center bays of the first floor. Now cased in
aluminum, the doors appear to have once had transoms. The plain, symmetrical facade is clad in aluminum and
has windows with 2/2 sash.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE _ see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the
building and the role(s)the ownersloccupants played within the community.
1-2 Griffin Place fust appears on the 1897 Salem atlas. Owned by E. Woodbury, the house sat on a large parcel
that also contained 165 Federal. Previous owners of the land without the Griffin Place building were H.A Tuttle
(1874)and K C.Tuttle(1851). The building was still owned by the Woodbury(Mrs. Esra)family in 1911,but it
appears that they rented it.Beginning in 1897, the occupants of number I were Charles F. Davis,a meat cutter,
and George T. White,a shoe cutter. At number 2 lived Leroy A.Fickett,a clerk, and Fredland Bail,a carpenter
and foreman working for Hamilton and Balcomb. From 1910 and into the 1930s. 1 Griffin Place was occupied by
Mrs.Mary Foley(widow of John)who worked as a mill operator, and shared her side with various individuals.
From 1950 to the 1970s,the principal occupant was Joseph J. Seward,a leather worker. From 1910 to 1970,2
Griffin Place was occupied by a variety of people including a currier, two leather workers,an employee of
Sylvania,a painter, and a shoe worker. The latter was Arthur Gourdeau, who resided there at least from 1950 to
1970.

BUILDING FORM 1-2 Griffin Place, Salem
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION _ see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms ofother buildings within the
community-
1-2 Griffin Place was a modest Victorian building that has been altered Set in a courtyard behind 165 Federal
Street,it is a two-story double house on a rectangular plan with its facade facing north. Eight bays wide by
approximately four bays deep,it has a flat roof pierced by one chimney at each end A brick stoop with iron hand
rails leads to side-by-side modem front doors occupying the two center bays of the first floor. Now cased in
aluminum the doors appear to have once had transoms. The plain, symmetrical facade is clad in aluminum and
has windows with 2/2 sash.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE _ see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the
building and the role(s)the owners/occupants plaved within the community.
1-2 Griffin Place first appears on the 1897 Salem atlas. Owned by E. Woodbury, the house sat on a large parcel
that also contained 165 Federal. Previous owners of the land without the Griffin Place building were H.A Tuttle
(1874)and H. C.Tuttle(1851). The building was still owned by the Woodbury(Mrs.Esra)family in 1911,but it
appears that they rented it.Beginning in 1897,the occupants of number 1 were Charles F.
The latter was Arthur Gourdeau, who resided there at least from 1950 to
1970.
