Statement of Purpose Salem, Massachusetts is a community of 41,000 people that is rich in art, culture, and history. Its residents are passionate about their hometown and graciously welcome one million visitors each year. In fact, Salem is the second most visited place in Massachusetts. In recent years a proliferation of above ground Lighting and Signal control Boxes (LSBs) has sprouted in downtown Salem and in other areas of the city. Their bland, standard presence usually detracts from the setting where they are placed. In the interest of enhancing the visual experience for residents and visitors in this great walking city, the City of Salem is inviting artists to help transform these stoic industrial essentials into visual and graphic delights that will provide an entertaining and stimulating experience to passersby. ArtBox 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 resulted in over 20 LSBs being transformed. Thanks to support from the Center for Creative and Performing Arts (CCPA) at Salem State, the City has identified two additional LSBs for Salem State A+D Majors to participate in ArtBox 2016. Two finalists, selected Salem State Art+ Design majors, have a chance to each receive a$500 stipend, if their ArtBox proposals are chosen and the LSBs are painted by the deadline. Who can participate? Any undergraduate or graduate Art+ Design major who is currently enrolled at Salem State University in a BA in Art, BA+ MEd (4+1), or MAT program, who can apply paint to an LSB, and who meets the requirements of this call for artists. A jury will make selection recommendations, and final approval will be made by the City of Salem. Artists'Proposals Artists' proposals should be based on the dimensions of the enclosed "Electrical Box Diagram".Artists' proposals should include a depiction of the planned visual treatment for all five sides of the LSB. Please note that the actual box may be a different proportion than the diagram. Also, the rear panel on some of the Art Boxes is not easily accessible (or visible). Photographs of the two Boxes that are available for this opportunity are provided at the end of this document. Boxes will be assigned by the City of Salem. Artists have the option of submitting a more detailed, one-to-one scale portion of their proposed piece on the enclosed sheet titled "One-to-One Scale Depiction."This is meant to provide judges with a clearer understanding of what a specific section of the art will look like at actual size. A detailed up- close view of a portion of the Box design is not required, but it may help provide a better idea of what the surface would look like in real life. Proposals should include the artist's signature (or identifying mark) as it would appear on the actual LSB. Signatures must not exceed 2 inches x 8 inches in actual size and may include the copyright sign V"with the date. All submitted proposals become the property of the City of Salem. What proposals are eligible? The first priority is that the Art Boxes are high quality artworks (in workmanship and content)that enliven the public realm. This can be realized in many forms and styles. Proposals should be positive, original and colorful in their appearance with an emphasis, or focus, on the following attributes: • Environment • Culture • History • Community Pride • Creativity Proposals should be designed to last a minimum of two years. However. LSBs are public property equipment and may require upgrading or need replacing at any time. There is no guarantee as to how long the artwork will remain on an LSB. The City has the right to move or remove the artwork at any time. Proposals will be ineligible if they involve: • A breach of intellectual property rights (i.e., somebody else's idea); • Trademarks, brand or business names, logos or copyrighted images; • Anything that is harmful to a third party; • Collage or gluing anything onto the box. What about copyright? The artist owns the copyright of the artwork created for the LSB and may use it for portfolio purposes, but not commercial purposes, for a period of two (2) years. However, the City of Salem may enter into an additional agreement with the artist if commercial products will be produced through the City of Salem or the ArtBox Program. The artist further agrees to allow the City of Salem use the artwork image in any noncommercial way, to promote the ArtBox Program and the City of Salem, or associated events. The ArtBox Program and the City agree to use all images in a professional manner and will label all images with the artist's name attached. In addition, the City reserves the rights to make and use promotional footage collected for television, web publication, and other media outlets. What steps are involved? 1. Applicants should review the enclosed materials including the draft Artist Contract. 2. Applicants need to mail or deliver a complete proposal so it is received by 12:00 noon on Friday, March 25, 2016. Late submissions will not be reviewed. City offices located at 120 Washington St, 3rd Floor, are open until 7pm on Thursdays and are closed Friday afternoons. 3. The jury will review the proposals and recommend two Salem State student artists for the two LSBs. 4. The City of Salem will grant final approval and inform the selected artists by April 4, 2016. 5. Selected artists will need to sign and return the Artist Contract. 6. The selected artists must complete their surface treatments of the Art Boxes by April 30, 2016. It normally takes artists 2-4 days to paint an Art Box. Other Useful Information • The City will have the LSB's primed and ready at the appropriate time. Below are the descriptions for each box. 1 . Corner of Lafayette St. and West St. "Lemonade Stand" This box will be painted to represent a wooden, homemade lemonade stand. Inside are small children distributing lemonade, and a boy yells "Lemonaaade!" from the small box in the front panel. The painting will be proportionate so the opening of the fence corresponds to the opening of the stand. On the side, the utility box that comes out will be painted into a gumball machine with a small sign below. I waited to create something different and relatable. There are many people that walk around this area, so it would be perfect for a lemonade stand. I hope that whenever this is seen it will bring a smile and sense of nostalgia to the pedestrians. 2. Corner of Washington St. and New Derby St. "Coastal Sunset" The location of this box is one to be seen by all Salem residents and tourists. The imagery has to be striking and represent Salem, MA. I had the idea to create a sunset scene with a lighthouse and incorporate the Friendship of Salem. My vision is to show the same scene, but from different points of view. For example, as you turn the box it should look like you are actually walking around the water. In each panel you find something new, whether it be the Friendship of Salem or the historical Salem sign in the water. I am available to work on the box at anytime during April, however I would need to set specific dates to request time off from work. The only obligations I have are April 13th and April 21 st after 6pm. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
