Salem Collective of Artists& Musicians Workshops&Performances Salem Collective of Artists&Musicians is confident in its ability to meet the minimum of twelve workshops and/or performances. In particular they plan to offer at least the following in 2014 with more to be determined: • Live music performances. Drawing from their immersion in the Salem music community, and many being performers themselves, the collective has a number of resources at their disposal. • Trash to treasure workshops. • Jewelry making workshops. • Visual arts workshops. • Sun-print fabric workshop. • Community Canvas-a collaborative art project. Page 3 Salem Collective of Artists& Musicians Artists' Row Proposal 2014 • Button making. • Paint-a-Pumpkin during Mayor's Night Out in October. • Leaf prints • Origami • Make your own musical instrument. • Spoken word. Salem Collective of Artists&Musicians at Stall#1 The space will be organized into three functional areas: an open working studio including a materials library,an exhibition space, and a retail sales counter. Workshops will be held in the studio or outside on the Row,and performances will take place either outside or in the exhibition space. Equipment will include raw materials and storage for those materials,a lockbox for cash transactions, drafting tables and limited seating. We will also utilize a tent to maximize outdoor space. The collective has no need for any permanent interior alterations of the stall. In order of preference, the collective would like to use Stall#1. While stall#1 is the collective's clea- choice,we would make a positive contribution to Artists' Row in any stall awarded us. Due to the collective's wide range of sizes of work, scale of work, and its heavy community involvement as evidenced by the last two years Stall#1 is ideal. In addition,in 2013 we refreshed stall#1 to reflect our spirit and aesthetic. Should we 3e awarded stall#1,setting up shop in 2014 would be streamlined due to furnishings already in our possession tailored to the stall's footprint last year. We would be poised to continue our work and pick up right where we left off. Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians in 2012 and 2013 Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians began on Artists' Row in Stall#2 for the 2012 season with 7 artists. By the close of business for the 2012 season over 30 artists were represented in our gallery with ages ranging from 13 to over 60. We brought in$4879 of revenue and 270 pieces of art sold. We are pleased that our goal of making art affordable and accessible was reached. 2013 marked Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians'second year on Artists' Row. Taking up residence in Stall #1 afforded the artists more studio space and a clear separation between studio and gallery. As a result, more work was produced and guest engagement increased. Our revenue increased by 55%over 2012 with$7561 worth of art being sold. In addition to an increase in revenue,we increased the total number of pieces sold by 13%with a total of 309. Although the goal of the collective is to create quality work and engage the public,we feel successful sales reflect that our work is being well-received and enjoyed. Appropriateness for Artists' Row Setting&Audience Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians brought a new demographic of artists and customers to Artists' Row in 2012 and 2013. We had several repeat customers, a number of whom would return to follow the progress of Page 4 Salem Collective of Artists& Musicians Artists' Row Proposal 2014 our work and the evolution of the space. In addition,a number of Lobster Shanty customers visited our space after their meal to compliment us on our musical performances. During Farmers Market hours we were certain to be making art outside of our stall to contribute to the Artists' Row atmosphere and market setting. In 2013 Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians was awarded a grant from the Salem Cultural Council to help fund their community engagement efforts. Local Artists All principal members are Salem residents. 27 of our 30 artists live in Salem. We have a strong interest in seeing the arts in Salem thrive, and because we live nearby, the logistics of running our organization on Artists' Row are assured--someone will always be available to open the shop. Our strong community ties including Gulu-Gulu Cafd, the Peabody Essex Museum, and Boston Bead Company give us the ability to drive foot traffic and attention to Artists' Row thereby increasing its visibility and activity. Cultural Diversity&Artistic Discipline Variety Our artists work in a wide variety of disciplines and media including sculpture, visual arts, jewelry making, multimedia, mixed media, and fibers. Our musicians'styles range from blues to folk to experimental. Our cultural diversity is progressive and dynamic. Community Engagement and the Creation of a Lively Atmosphere in Marketplace Area Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians feels a strong connection to the Salem community. Last year Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians created and ran the Community Art Space at the Salem Arts Festival where artists were invited to sell their work and provide interactive activities for the public. In 2012 we supplied the Salem Main Streets sponsored Ice Cream Bowl with artists for face painting on August 7. We also appeared on the Gasworks public access television show on August 11,2012. We view art as an interactive experience, and in 2013 we created several pieces that engaged the participation of the community including our Plinko golf Eall maze, cardboard cutouts,Tasmanian Devil cage, "Stand Here"alien abduction painting, and the classic Vampire Test mirror. Not only do pieces like these directly involve the public in art, but several customers and passersay took their pictures with these pieces which propagated interest in Artists' Row and Salem as a whole. Lastly, our open, working studio draws the public in,invites them to inquire about the artistic process, and creates an interactive experience that is both beneficial to the Artists' Row audience and the artists themselves. Key community events include: • Essex Street Fair. The collective brought Artists' Row to Essex Street along with three other tenants during the Salem Chamber of Commerce's Essex Street Fair by renting booth space and selling our wo-k. This participation drove foot traffic to Artists' Row. • Gimme Shelter Birdhouse Auction: silent auction to benefit the Northeast Animal Shelter. Live music, birdhouse making workshops, community involvement. • Paint-a-Pumpkin. We estimate 300 people attended our collaborative event during Haunted Happenings in 2013.Activities included face painting, refreshments, workshop, music, decorations. • Salem YMCA fundraiser at Gulu-Lulu Cafe April 2014. Active year-round,Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians is holding a workshop with YMCA afterschool children to create art for a fundraiser selling art by the children of the Y. The collective will also hang the work. All proceeds to benefit the Salem YMCA. Quality of Work All principal members hold art degrees and use their talent to make art available to the public. We feel art should be accessible and affordable, and our 2013 and 2012 sales reflect that. Please see the appendix for samples of our work. Page 6 Salem Collective of Artists & Musicians Artists' Row Proposal 2014 Ability to Keep Art Stall Open to the Public More than the Minimum Required Times and Days Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians held open hours beyond the minimum requirements established in our contract in 2012 and 2013 and is prepared to exceed those requirements again in 2014. Art is far more than a hobby for our group, and its commitment to the operation of the stall over the last two years has been exemplary. Ability to Work Well with Other Diverse Artists in a Group Setting In 2012 and 2013 Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians worked in harmony with the other Artists' Row residents and Salem Farmers Market vendors. We effectively coordinated promotional efforts, contributed to the creative process of our neighbors, and benefited from the input and ideas our fellow residents. Engaging in cross promotion with other Artists' Row artists and city-wide events and festivals benefited Artists' Row as a whole. In short, the Artists' Row setting works in concert with our goal of the free exchange of ideas and resources. In 2013 the collective strengthened its collaboration with the other Artists' Row tenants by spearheading the organization of these tenant-wide events: Paint-a-Pumpkin. Begun in 2012 as a Salem Collective event, Paint-a-Pumpkin is a free event open to the public during Haunted Happenings. In 2013 the collective opened this already successful event to the rest of the Artists' Row tenants resulting in the entire Row's participation and coordination efforts. Last year, in cooperation with our Artists' Row neighbors,we facilitated the painting of 200 pumpkins with an estimated attendance of over 300 people including Mayor Driscoll. We included our neighbors in the celebration with The Lobster Shanty and Front Street Coffeehouse providing refreshments and the Salem YMCA's generous loan of tables and chairs. Gimme Shelter Birdhouse Auction. In 2013 the collective collaborated with Roost to bring this already- established fundraiser to Artists' Row for first time. As Roost was unable to organize the event in 2013,Salem Collective inherited the task and invited artists throughout the Row to donate and host auction items. We engaged the public further with a felt birdhouse making workshop and live band, BlackDogBrother. Refreshments were donated by Gulu-Gulu Cafe and Flying Saucer Pizza Company. The Northeast Animal Shelter increased exposure and awareness by manning a table and cross promoted the event. As a result,$700 was raised to benefit the shelter. Artists'Row Scavenger Hunt.Salem Collective,Serendipitish, and Social Palates engaged the public to visit all three stalls on the Row and to participate in art-making tailored to each space's specialty. After completing the scavenger hunt, participants went home with a goodie bag of art-making supplies. In short,Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians has proven to lead the collaboration of the efforts of its fellow Artists' Row neighbors and bring vitality and visibility to this cultural hub of the City of Salem. Page 7 Salem Collective of Artists & Musicians Artists' Row Proposal 2014 In Conclusion The Salem Collective of Artists& Musicians is focused on the art process and performance. The collective's presence on Artists' Row establishes an engaging, lively, thriving artist community in the heart of the City of Salem. We look forward to furthering our commitment to the community and collaboration with other artists. We hope you will allow us the opportunity to build upon our first two years. Previously Serendipitish, we are excited to move in new directions artistically, which include but are not limited to a name change to Marrow. The new name reflects exciting changes happening in our circle. Sarah, one of our partners in Serendipitish in 2013, is leaving to start her new venture as part-owner of The Ugly Mug Diner on Washington Street. While we are sad to lose her as a collaborator, we are tremendcusly excited for her new enterprise. The name Serendipitish, which was previously Alikya's space on Artists' Row in 2011 and 2012 has now become her personal brand for fiberarts, which is further described in her attached artists' statement. "Marrow", reflects a deep sense of purpose and meaning that we have found we share through our individual works and collaborations since the start of the 2013 season. Collectively we have found bones to be a recurring theme in our artwork, and though they tend to have a connotation with death, the marrow within living bone is the source of regeneration and life. Like bone, art and the ability to create together are our creative scaffolding, providing structure, protection, and lifeblood. Art and the process of its creation are our marrow. As Serendipitish, we enjoyed a tremendous season in 2013, with increased sales and collaboration, and though we would be pleased to be awarded any space, we feel that#4 is best for our purposes. Having multiple artists in residence, #4 provides ample space for each individual to create a comfortable work area, while also leaving enough room for public workshops and gallery space. Having worked in stall#4 for a season, we understand how to better utilize the space overall. If awarded the space, we plan to use the larger, more open area (nearer to The Shanty) as our studio and the longer space as a gallery. This will allow for better flow, visibility of the showroom, and use the"courtyard"of the Row to provide better cross traffic from one stall to the next. (When The Shanty has their full patio unfurled it results in a tunnel outside the door we used in 2013 as our primary customer entrance. Our hope in using the other entrance is that people will pause after funneling past The Shanty, and then decide to come into the space.) The 2013 season saw some amazing events and collaborations along the Row, which we are excited to continue and build upon: • Formerly run by Roost and Company, the 3rd annual Gimme Shelter Birdhouse Auction to benefit the Northeast Animal Shelter was a hosted by SCAM, Social Palates and Serendipitish. Each stall provided auction items, a creative element of music or photography or felt birdhouse making, and displayed the birdhouses during the auction itself. • The Artists' Row Scavenger Hunt involved participation from SCAM, Serendipitish and Social Palates with over 25 participants following clues from one stall to the next, challenging them to artistic participation and visiting within each stall • SCAM's free-to-the-public Pumpkin Painting party was expanded this year, with The Lobster Shanty providing food, Serendipitish music and face painting, Social Palates photography of costumes and pumpkins, and all the businesses providing manpower to assist the more than 200 participants paint and decorate pumpkins 2013 workshops provided solely by Serendipitish included drawing and painting workshops, crochet lessons, live music performances, spinning wheel demonstrations, Bellydance Jams, and daily postings and invitations on what was being worked on in the space. Planned workshops for the coming season include similar events to those previously provided, but also a community art creation project involving our expanded relationship with Lynn-based non-profit, Extras for Creative Reuse. Using supplies acquired from Extras, we are proposing a monthly art challenge wherein we provide free kits for the public to take home, add to and use to create unique artwork. They would then be asked to bring their work back to the Row the following week, where it would be displayed and voted upon by the public. The piece with the most votes would then be on display for the remainder of the month, to be replaced with the winner of the next month's challenge. Also on our minds is the need to promote Artists' Row across the city of Salem. We believe this can best be achieved through collaborative advertising, drawing positive attention to all of the groups participating in 2014. We propose creating anc disseminating flyers and postcards to the city's hotels and inns as well as local restaurants and businesses. As Marrow we would like to construct two sturdy A-frames to be positioned at either end of the Row drawing attention to our presence as well as announce any special events or work being done, similar to our 2013 window display, "What's she working on today?". Row artists could update, alert and invite the public to see work being actively created on a daily basis. In the same vein, we intend to use social media to drive traffic to our own space and promote the entire Row with interactive postings. Contests, art challenges and polls will be posted online through Facebook, Instagram and other outlets to reach the public and to invite them to join us. Thank you for your consideration, Marrow Katherine Gerolamo Jennifer Platt Alikya Wingate Jennifer Platt Artist Statement 2014 In the midst of chaos, I looked within to find stability. The spine is our inner structure that keeps us stable.Art has always possessed a therapeutic quality for me. It allows me the means to purge unwanted negative energy while creating. My current series of drawings did just that. I allowed myself to use the material, size, and shapes 1 preferred most. I started drawing something I like to look at and found new things with in each drawing that enticed me to create more. I kept finding things that I liked out of each drawing to bring to the next drawing until only the process remained. My initial intent was to create a body of work that explores the skeleton and the body's systems in an abstract way.The first series was very focused on the literal skeleton. The next series brought me in a more abstract direction with a concentration on curved lines that were only suggestive of a skeleton. I decided to start drawing la ge and using the idea of a spine as a stable structural base. I found a new language with in circles that is consistent through out this series but used differently in each drawing. It was at-his point that I started to look at Terry Winters' work. His work is prominently abstracted clusters of circles that float in and out of a spatial plane. I enjoyed that freedom that I had to take my work to new and different places. My goal was to create a body of work that I liked that wasn't representational. I wanted to branch out and explore new options. Moving forward, my plan is to continue in this explorative direction utilizing multi-mediums. This body of work reminded me that despite the chaos of life I need to be creating what I want. I need to be constantly working in my sketchbook in order to have and maintain stability. I was also reminded that art is all about who I am and what I like and it is better when I am emotionally invested. Art should not be created for someone but reflect who the person is that created it. Whether it is a piece of fiber art, jewelry, sculpture or a dance performance, there is a deep desire to connect with others through art. I grew up in a family of artists where outings were to the museums and galleries of New York City and TV was for documentaries(ok, and the Muppets). Viten my friends were going to sport and scouting camps I spent my summers in the woods of the Usdan center studying modern dance, piano and silversmithing. We ate peanut butter and jelly while watching the New York City Ballet and listening to Odetta sing spirituals, not realizing how unusually blessed we were. My mother taught me to sew, knit and crochet and I would try to re-create the beadwork of my great-grandmother who used to hand-bead flapper dresses and accessories in the 20s. Art was never anything I set out to do-it was simply a part of everyday life. In my teens I began to study middle eastern dance and silversmithing in earnest. I then studied jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and taught at the Usdan Center in the summer. It was my decision to move to Vermont and start a new life that inspired the next decade of my art, however. I started a fiber farm, raising llamas, sheep, cattle and angora rabbits and drove across the mountains every week to learn handspinning and dying in an artists' home. I honed my knitting skills and made my own garments from absolute scratch. Now,here in Salem, I have taken all of my past experiences, skills and materials and used them to create unique works that have their own process and story. My work draws on my life experiences and imparts my love of art to others by incorporating these materials with found objects and stories from the creative process involved. The name Serendipitish comes from a conversation with my father wherein he used it to describe how he makes emotional color choices in his paintings. A perfect moniker for my work, which develops organically and certainly "serendipitishly", it has been the name of my solo and later, shared space on Artists' Row. It is now my personal brand for all of my works, notably my new line of handspun yams. Each unique design of yarn I have named for a different neighborhood here in the great city of Salem. Each colorway is then named with a bit of trivia about that neighborhood(some publicly known, some private jokes). For instance: "Winter Island"has"The Hangar", "McIntyre District"has"Library Card","Salem Willows"has"Chop Suey Sandwich" and "Artists' Row" has"Garlic Bomb"(what I call the way the Row smells when Passage to India makes their sauce!) n a r Ii till 1 10 CONDITQ "f CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS 9 ARTISTS' ROW PROGRAM KIMBERLEY DRISMLL RNYOR PHOTO DESCRIPTION SHEET (CONT.) I primarily work with tiny seed beads or faceted stones, weaving and wire wrapping them together to form bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings. I relish the challenge of researching, creating a pattern and incrementally building order from chaos. Loving history, I take comfort in the fact that the same wire techniques I use today were used by the ancient Greeks; that the images in some of my woven cuff bracelets were modified from the paintings of my great-grandmother and the cave paintings in Lascaux; that jewelry becomes a part of your own personal history, and can be passed down from generation to generation. jewelry is living, wearable art that patinas with each year it's worn, and it thrills me to know that each piece I create and send out into the world becomes a part of the wearer's life and identity. The attached proposed workshop schedule of the free workshops and classes I will offer covers 51 days of the season. 34 of these days are free workshops with 13 different activities. This does not include any free workshops or fee type classes the invited crafters will be offering. It is my intention that the shop have at least one activity, other the sale of our products each week The Cup and Ball contest on Thursdays will have a small prize for the person with the most competitive catches. The number of catches and their name will be post to encourage more public participation. In addition, the felted ring workshop will be offered daily was it was lastyear. This workshop will be advertised with a vinyl sign posted over the door of the shop. The classes that require a fee have been priced so nearly anyone could afford to participate. Basically, the fee only covers the cost of the supplies and not time the class will take up. The reason of this is to try and encourage the public to come more often to and shop Artisans Row. It will also through the advertising make the public more aware of Artisans Row and the important role that it plays in the Art scene of Salem.
