STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Designed by Samuel McIntire and erected in 1806-07, Hamilton Hall is
an architecturally distinguished example of a public building built in the
Federal-Adamesque or Early Republican style. Hamilton Hall has been little-
altered and still serves its original functions.
History
The stimulus leading to the construction of Hamilton Hall apparently
came in the political schism between the Federalists and Republicans which
split the Salem Assemblies in 1805. The building was under construction
in 1806 and on September 11, 1807 its large hall was used for an auction
and a month later for a ball. The structure was named Hamilton Hall in
honor of Alexander Hamilton.
The owners were incorporated in 1820 as the Proprietors of the South
Buildings. The first-story rooms on the west (front) side of .the hall
were not finished until 1824 and records indicate that a new front door,
w probably the one in the west elevation, was added in 1845. This handsome
LU building has housed the Salem Assemblies for more than 160 years and is stil
being used for this purpose.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (It&"Own) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Hamilton Hall is a three-story structure, five-bays wide and five-bays
deep, with walls of brick laid in Flemish bond, gable roof, and four tall
interior end chimneys. The west elevation, facing on Cambridge Street, is
the main facade. This gable end is treated as a pediment and has a large r"
semicircular window in its center. First-story windows on the front and
sides are rectangular and set close to the prominent brick belt course which
arks the second floor level and extends around the building. Second story
windows on the west elevation are topped by flat winged. stone arches, while
those on the third story are rectangular and set close to the cornice. . The
windows on all three levels of the west front and the first-story windows of
the sides are adorned by exterior louvred shutters. The second-stories of
both the north and south sides are each occupied by a series of five very
tall Palladian windows, each with a wood paneled insert above containing a
carved ornament. The famous McIntire eagle is preserved in the center panel
of the north side. N
A one-story center portico, supported by four wood columns, shelters M077
the main entrance door which is located in the west facade. The center door m
in the north elevation is less elaborately decorated by a flat stone arch Mme.
and pilasters. A center hall extends about half way through the building Z
from the west door and divides the four rooms on the first floor into pairs.
The two west rooms, finished in 1824, have uncarved mantels and are used as
small shops. In their rear are a large parlor and kitchen.
M
The east (or back) halves of the entire second and third floors are C. ^^
occupied by a magnificent ballroom, two stories in height, lighted by six
tall Palladian windows- three set in each side wall, and with two large
fireplaces located in the east wall. The large room has its original spring _4
paii
dance floor and a gallery.over the center.door in the west wall. The front _
or west half of the second floor is occupied by two rooms and a center hall. 0
The third floor, in the front portion, is comprised of one long room, with a Z
center door in the east. wall that opens onto the gallery in the Assembly or I^
ballroom.
Hamilton Hall is in good condition, little-altered, and still used for
its original purpose. The building is also open to visitors.
