The concrete footings and foundation walls had been poured,thus making it impossible to view the soil substrate immediately under the footings. However,the material adjacent to the bottom of the footings was generally broken ledge,.mixed, in places, with glacial till. This material is, in my opinion,material class 5, with allowable hearing capacity of 8 tons per square foot, per the 7a'edition of the MSBC. The 8s'edition would allow 2 tons per square foot times the number of feet of embedment, which is substantially more liberal than the 7s' edition. The actual maximum soil loading for this building is conservatively estimated to be 1.2 tons per square foot. Further, a concrete wall 10 inebes thick by 8 feet high has the capacity to bridge a soft spot at least 10 feet long.. In summary, I see no reason to believe that this foundation wall is not adequately supported by the soil below, or that any structural problems will ensue. It should be pointed out, however,that the site configuration appears to be such as to cause concern about ingress of storm water into the basement, and particular caution with drainage systems is recommended.
