Thank you for taking the time to review our proposal for an elevator addition to the Tabernacle
Congregational Church. We appreciate in particular your consideration of this item on August 31". To aid
your process,we have attached a 6-page packet that illustrates the following points.
The proposed construction is to take place on the west side of the church at 50 Washington Street (sheet 1,
Area Map). The project will provide an elevator for mobility-impaired parishioners and visitors. While on
site, the contractor will also remove a cinderblock garage, provide landscaping, and expand the parking area
to accommodate four cars (sheet 2, Site Plan).
The new construction is intended to complement and respect the existing building as well as the other city
center buildings. The articulated shaft was designed to respond to the surrounding neighborhood of towers
and steeples (sheet 3,North West View).
The team investigated a number of different cladding materials before deciding on the granite and lead
coated copper shown. The stone base will be reclaimed stone from the existing church. The granite covered
by the new shaft will be removed and used to match the existing 5'0"water table(sheet 4,Elevations).
The other primary material is lead coated copper. Not only does it complement the granite, but its
installation can be controlled to economically achieve a certain level of detail. These articulations, obtained
through the metal's seams, allow the addition to maintain the same level of visual interest as other buildings
in the neighborhood and other elements of the existing church. The final decision to use lead coated copper
was made after surveying area lead coated copper/masonry buildings(sheets 5&6, Material Illustrations).
