RECOMMENDATION:
At their meeting on May 26, 2004,the Design Review Board recommended approval
of the proposal as submitted.
PROPOSAL:
The proposal includes the installation of a 12' x 1'2" wall sign with existing wood
signage board painted black with plastic letters painted gold. The lettering will be
10" on the upper case letter and 7" on the lower case letter. The owner did install
the sign prior to receiving approval from the DRB/SRA and is asking approval as
installed.

Dear Ms.Hartford,
The following is a request on the behalf of my client Ms.Lori Landess,owner of said Samantha's,
177 Essex Street to address the concerns raised in our May 13,2004 phone conversation,pertaining to the
non-permitted and non-approved alteration of the existing surface mounted wood sign on front fagade of
her commercial rental property.Although it is agreed that the alteration of this signage is not in compliance
due to non Design Review Board and Salem Redevelopment Authority approval and permitting procedure,
it is the intention of this letter to put forth an immediate and good faith resolution to remedy this err by a
longtime downtown Salem proprietor's judgment.
Although Ms. Landess actions were erroneous and slightly overzealous(aka:no permits or approvals
obtained)they were well intentioned and for better or worse completed in a state of exhilaration while
moving in to her new location. The owner has attached new 10"high plastic letters to the existing black,
surface mounted wood signage board on the front of her storefront,said letters,9-total, are painted gold to
stay consistent with adjacent and surrounding signage,mimicking prior signage aesthetics.The gold on
black color scheme was selected after consultation with a local paint color designer and adhering of letters
was preformed by the owner.
The alteration to the existing signage board in letters and color will have low impact on the surrounding
buildings on Essex Street,so it is requested that approval be given for this minor signage alteration.
