As you know, you submitted a sign application on 7/19/04 and met with Tania Hartford and me on 7/22/04 to discuss the Salem Storefront Improvement Program and the possibility of locating a different type of sign than what was originally proposed. Following the meeting, you were asked to confirm whether or not you would like to participate in the Storefront Improvement Program, and if so, resubmit new sign specifications. However, that was ignored, and instead you have erected a sign without a sign permit. The Salem Sign Ordinance requires all signs to be reviewed and approved prior to their installation. Therefore, this wall sign (view attached photo) located at 108 Lafayette Street is an illegal sign and must be removed immediately. If this sign is not removed from your building within 14 days receipt of this letter, this matter will be forwarded to the Building Commissioner who will enforce the penalties and fines under Sec 3.36 & 3.29 of the Salem Sign Ordinance and 780 CMR Sec 3102.4 of the Building State Code. At this time,you are directed to resubmit a sign application for your proposed sign and include all of the submittal requirements for review. Please be aware that in some areas throughout the City,review by a governing Board must take place before a City permit can be issued. These areas include the Urban Renewal Area;Local Historic Districts; and Entrance Corridor Overlay Districts. Also,please be aware that any sign or awning hung over a public way or sidewalk shall require a surety bond in the sum of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00)conditioned to save harmless the City from any claims.
