Following this department's review of your proposed signage for the above reference property, it has been determined that the proposed signage cannot be approved as submitted. Your proposal consists of an internally illuminated sign cabinet affixed to the underside of the building fascia, partially covering the show room windows. As you are aware, the building fronting Canal Street does not have a sign band and as previously discussed, the Salem Sign Ordinance does not allow signs to locate above the roofline of the building (3-45(9) Salem Sign Ordinance). With that said, the building fronting Canal Street does not offer much exterior space to locate signage, however, you may locate signage within the show room windows facing out toward the public way. I have attached the Salem Sign Ordinance and the Entrance Corridor Overlay District Ordinance for your review. Following the city's design review of your proposed signage, it has been determined that the proposed signage fronting on Hershey Street does not fit with the building's character and cannot be approved as submitted. Furthermore, any sign located on the building should be sized to equal the dimensions of the area above the window on the gable end of the building and not extend outside that area as you have proposed. Finally, the proposed signage fronting on Canal Street cannot be approved as submitted. The existing roof sign is illegal and cannot be replaced with your proposed roof sign. The Salem Sign Ordinance does not allow signs to be located higher than the roofline of the building (pg 10, 3-45(9) Salem Sign Ordinance).
