Ropes (westerly 2/3) . Immediately Varney and Rey- nolds contracted with mason Samuel S. Standley to erect their portion of the building from plans and specifications prepared by one L. Put- nam of Salem. The Ropes soon followed suit, also contracted with Stand- lev for their part of the building, and all work was completed by the Ziddle of June. In subsequent years the block changed hands many t times, and was used for a variety of commercial/retail purposes. A ire badly damaged the building in 1902 but it was rebuilt_ VtoavoY .- Pt t4o-:k-1 `CES-6tvv 441xi In the early 1970s, under the direction of/. local architect John Emerson, its fine late Federal-style lines, fenestration, brickwork and A granite post-and-lintel storefronts were restored. The charming little two-story brick structure to the right (east) (photo, left) ^at number 15 was erected in 1859-60 for the Salem police department and police court. The brick masonry was by Simeon Flint, and the car- pentry by Lord & Russell. The building' s most outstanding architectur- al features are the dentiled brick cornice, the granite window lintels and sills with corbel stops, and a granite front doorway lintel with ogee-curve brackets, when restoration occurred in the early 1970s, James Ballou of Salem served as the consulting architect. .
