Jay,
I know you are out of the office until next week but I wanted to let you know the status of the Asahi sign as I will be out
of the office until Wednesday of next week.
After further review of the directional signage on Church Street, we found that it made more sense to use that area for a
mall directory sign rather than a sign for a single business. Our fear is that without a programmatic signage proposal for
the whole mall, putting this sign up would lead to other businesses in the mall seeking signage along Church Street and
we would have chaotic mix of signage. We are willing to offer our architectural services to design this directory sign and
pay for half of the sign/installation.
As for the sign that was proposed (and apparently was fabricated) for Asahi, we suggested she place that sign in the
vestibule, inside the building, which would not require a permit.
The other sign proposed along Essex Street was tabled because it does not meet the dimensional requirements allowed in
the Urban Renewal Area. Essentially, the total area of signage allowed is one linear foot per square feet of frontage. This
would include existing signage. The sign will need to be reduced in size in order for it to meet these requirements. The
DRB had comments on how to do that and I can share those comments with you when you return.
Finally, I am willing to meet with Jerry and you (or whoever you feel should be included) to discuss these signage issues
as well as getting the cafe permit in place. I am not trying to be difficult. I really would like to help to make this business
thrive and grow in Salem. I may be able to offer some financing options to help them as well.

Asahi Japanese Restaurant Inc. is requesting permission to place a sign at the entrance to
the Museum Place Mall.The sign would be helpful in alerting potential customers to our location
at the rear of the mall. The location of Asahi Japanese Restaurant is particularly difficult to find
because it is situated on the Essex street side of the mall which is closed to automotive traffic.
Furthermore,we are currently the only business that is considered part of the mall that is not
located within the mall.It has come to our attention that we are required to remove a sign that is
already in place on the Essex street side of the mall.We have planned to do this within the next 7-
10 days.We believe that the addition of a sign to the entrance of the mall would greatly improve
patronage at the restaurant and make it easier for customers to locate our place of business.We

Asahi restaurant has the approval of landlord, Marley Properties Salem, to erect either
sign at the Church St. vestibule location specified.As it is technically outside the
building, approval from the City of Salem may be required and if so Asahi will be
responsible for all permits and fees required by the City.
Upon removal of the sign, Asahi restaurant will be required to restore the location
where mounted to ifs previously existing condition.

SIGN PERMIT PROCESS
All exterior signs, awnings and interior signs that can be seen from the exterior are
required to have a City of Salem Sign Permit before erection can take place.
Please be aware that in some areas throughout the City, review by a governing Board
must take place before a City permit can be issued. These areas include the Urban
Renewal Area; Local Historic Districts; and Entrance Corridor Overlay Districts.
All applications must be completed and submitted with:
• Scaled Drawing of Sign
• Color Scheme
• Letter Style (font)
• Letter Size
• Method of Attachment
• Method of Lighting
• Dimensions of Sign Area Background
• Photograph of Building/Sign Site
(Building Inspector may require additional pertinent information to insure compliance
with the City of Salem Sign Ordinance and any other applicable laws)
There is a twenty dollar($20.00)minimum permit fee for each application. If the estimated cost
of construction and erection is$2,000.00 or more, a fee of$10.00 per$1,000.00 plus a$5.00
application fee will be charged.
Please note that a licensed electrician must install any sign or ancillary lighting and sign
boxes must be UL listed. An Electrical Permit must be obtained from the City of Salem
Electrical Department,48 Lafayette Street,and be submitted with the sign application
before a sign permit will be issued.
Also, please be aware that any sign or awning hung over a public way or sidewalk shall
require a surety bond in the sum of one thousand dollars($1,000.00)conditioned to save
harmless the City from any claims. This bond must be placed on file in the City Clerk's
office. A copy of such bond must be submitted with the sign application before a sign permit
will be issued.
