After further review of the directional signage on Church Street, we found that it made more sense to use that area for a mall directory sign rather than a sign for a single business. Our fear is that without a programmatic signage proposal for the whole mall, putting this sign up would lead to other businesses in the mall seeking signage along Church Street and we would have chaotic mix of signage. We are willing to offer our architectural services to design this directory sign and pay for half of the sign/installation. As for the sign that was proposed (and apparently was fabricated) for Asahi, we suggested she place that sign in the vestibule, inside the building, which would not require a permit. The other sign proposed along Essex Street was tabled because it does not meet the dimensional requirements allowed in the Urban Renewal Area. Essentially, the total area of signage allowed is one linear foot per square feet of frontage. This would include existing signage. The sign will need to be reduced in size in order for it to meet these requirements. The DRB had comments on how to do that and I can share those comments with you when you return. Finally, I am willing to meet with Jerry and you (or whoever you feel should be included) to discuss these signage issues as well as getting the cafe permit in place. I am not trying to be difficult. I really would like to help to make this business thrive and grow in Salem. I may be able to offer some financing options to help them as well.
