OBSERVATIONS:
A site visit was made to the above referenced project to observe earthwork construction. The following
was observed. The UTS representative met with Mr. Bob Levesque of Fulcrum (GC) and Mr. Donny Taranto of
Pitt Pipeline (site contractor).
The UTS representative observed the site contractor excavating perimeter footings for building #2. The
site contractor exposed the tops of the previously installed grouted concrete columns (GCC) at the
bottom of the footing excavations. During the footing excavations groundwater began weeping into the
excavations with some areas containing as much as 10 inches of standing water. Due to the standing
water the subgrade was not able to be compacted but rather it was heeled with the excavator bucket. The
footing excavation spanned along the northern perimeter and extended south to column line 18. See
attached sketch.
The footing excavation was about 3 to 4 feet deep and extended through previously placed Structural
Fill and existing clay fill. The two materials were separated to re-use the Structural Fill as backfill
within the building footprint.
Woven geotextile fabric was used over the bottom of the footing excavation and then covered with 6 to
10 inches of 3/4 inch crushed stone. The UTS representative informed the site contractor and GC that
the use of non-woven geotextile fabric is indicated on the design drawings. The UTS representative
suggested that this change be brought to the geopier designer's attention for review. The crushed stone
