OBSERVATIONS:
This report follows a site visit to observe/test the earthwork for: Footing trench excavation.
Sub grade improvements were completed within proposed roadway areas located at the ENE side of
proposed building 2. The area was carried down to approximately 2' below the deepest utility invert
utilizing the Deere 450 excavator equipped with a flat cutting edge (flared teeth) to minimize sub
grade disturbance. Careful attention focused on utility grades and layout to make specific
accommodations for manholes and deep utility runs. The sub grade soil in this area is organic fill
including tannin bark, clay and organic silt with wood. Existing timber piles were encountered during
excavation and were cut off as necessary to avoid utility installation interference. Groundwater was
present. Excavation was performed in small controlled sections to minimize water accumulation and sub
grade softening. A layer of geogrid was placed atop the sub grade to improve stability. Compaction of
the sub grade will not be feasible due to the wet organic sub grade soils. An approximately 12 - 18"
thick layer of 2" crushed stone was placed and graded. The surface of the stone was tamped into place
utilizing the excavator bucket. The area was filled placing approximately 12" thick lifts of 2" minus
processed gravel. Each lift was compacted employing a minimum of 6 passes of coverage utilizing the IR
10 ton drum roller and trafficked with other heavy equipment exhibiting stable/firm conditions. The
work completed on this date was performed in accordance with the recommendations provided in email
correspondence by Kevin Martin of KMM; the geotechnical engineer of record. The tannin bark and highly
organic soils were segregated from the granular fill over burden and stockpiled onsite.
Foundation backfilling was initiated along the western perimeter of building 2 along column line G
from 11 - 17 (see sketch). The material used is 2" minus imported processed gravel consisting of F - C

gravel, some sand, trace silt. A single approximately 16" thick lift was placed and graded utilizing
the Deere 75G excavator. Placement and compaction of the backfill material remained incomplete upon the
time of departure.
