Dear Mr. Tremblay:
On Monday,September 18, 1995, 1 filed an application with the Salem Historical Commission
to have a building on my property, an old neighborhood grocery store located at 31 Ocean
Avenue, demolished. The structure is over 50 years old and had not been used as a
commercial building since approximately 1967. It is currently sagging on the side which is
next to our home at 37 Summit Avenue. The roof is in disrepair and the main support beam
for the building is rotted. I have the support beam temporarily braced to keep it from falling.
This is the condition in which we purchased the property in October, 1992.
At its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, September 20, 1995, 1 explained the
condition of the building to the Commission members and the fact that my wife and I just
wanted a larger yard for our two children to use. Unfortunately, the Commission voted
unanimously not to give their approval for the demolition of the structure. The Commission
Chair indicated I could return in six months and that the request would be reviewed again at
that time.
My wife and I have no intention of renovating the structure and it will, therefore, remain in
a deteriorating state. .
As members of the community who are very concerned about the safety and appearance of
our City's neighborhoods, my wife and I thought we should bring this matter to your attention
and would request that you inspect the.premises.
