Subject: Drain Inlet at 6 Nurse Way, Salem (Lot 233)
Dear Mr. Holloran:
As requested, the undersigned made a limited visual inspection of the subject
drain inlet on August 2, 2013. The purpose of the inspection was to inspect the
drain inlet and evaluate its operation. Weather conditions during the inspection
and in the overnight hours prior to the inspection were rain, occasionally heavy at
times.
The drain inlet serves an approximately 6' x 9' recess in the grade adjacent to the
rear sliding door from the basement of the house. The recess is lined with
processed peastone. There is an approximately 6-inch diameter drain inlet at the
ground surface within the recess. The rim of the drain inlet is located
approximately 4" below the basement floor elevation. The drain inlet is
constructed of plastic and is connected to an approximately 3-inch diameter drain
line. The invert of the drain line is located approximately 9-inches below the
basement floor elevation. The drain inlet pipe conveys flow to an approximately
18" wide x 8' long x 18" deep pit filled with %" nominal size crushed stone located
adjacent to the driveway.
The roof of the building is served by gutters and downspouts that convey flow to
the corners of the building, and discharge away from the recess. As long as the
gutters and downspouts are maintained, there is no direct path by which roof
runoff could be introduced into the recess.
During our inspection there was no significant flow in the drain line, even though
rain was heavy at times. Water falling within the 6' x 9' recess was instead
infiltrating into the ground through the peastone surface.
During heavier rainstorms, if the rate of rainfall exceeds the infiltration capacity of
soils within the recess, water will accumulate and fall into the plastic drain inlet.
From that point water will be conveyed to the infiltration pit along the driveway.
The infiltration pit provides another opportunity for water to infiltrate
into the ground. If the infiltration pit becomes saturated, water will flow over the
ground surface to the driveway, which is sloped to drain to towards the roadway.
During our inspection, there were no signs of flow having occurred from the
infiltration pit onto the driveway.
