This Department received complaints about code violations at your property located at 187 North Street,
they were investigated on August 5, 2014 and your property was found to be in violation of the
Massachusetts State Building Code. Present at the inspection were Salem Fire Marshall Mr. Peter
Schaeublin, Elizabeth Gagakis and Mr. David Greenbaum of the Health Department, and myself
Each City Department present at the meeting shall be submitting their own reports regarding violations
cited, so let it be noted that violations stated in this correspondence are solely matters that are governed
by this office and the Massachusetts State Building Code 780 CMR,but are not the only items of concern
on the property. Violations regarding hallways, stair access to egress doors, storage of combustibles
materials and such was virtually unchanged and in some cases far more egregious. Therefore,under the
authority of the Mass State building code 780 C.M.R,you are directed to address the following:
1- Exit Stairways section 1020.]-"an exit shall not be used for any purpose that interferes with its
function as a means of egress"Exit stairways can have no chairs, desks, boxes, bikes etc. and are not to
be used for storage of objects at any time as was the situation and noted at the time of inspection.
2- Corridors section 1018- Corridors leading to exits are also not to be used for any purpose that
interferes with the path of egress.Also, Combustible materials, maintenance materials cannot
be stored in the hallways such as paint cans.
3- Exit passageways-section 1023. The exit passageways (approach to the exit doors inside the units
cannot be less than 36". Please inform the tenants that in the area of the doorways to make sure
there are:no loose materials or furniture which can tip easily and reduce or obstruct the
doorways. The area shall be one foot back from the edge of the door and four feet into the room.
4- Smoke detector not secured at rear entry door.

5- Front porch corner wood structural post has failed and possesses a threat to public safety. This
correction work must be completed immediately.
6- Front entry stair railing and balustrade has failed and possesses a threat to tenant and public
safety This correction work must be completed immediately.
7- The back stairway from the second floor unit has a storage attic area that is open to the egress
stair. This attic storage area must be separated with one (1)—hour rated door.
8- Storage shed in the rear yard is in disrepair and must be repaired of removed immediately.
9- Unit number designations shall be placed on all entry doors to the living units,presently there are
duplicate Unit#5's.
This Department has no record of a required building permit any of the work obvious on Basement and
First Floor levels of the property. You are directed by this letter to file the appropriate applications for
permit in our office at 120 Washington Street, 3`d Floor at the earliest possible time.
You are hereby ordered to begin to rectify these conditions within 7 days of receipt of this notice.
Failure to do so may result in further actions being brought against you,up to and including the filing of
criminal complaints at District Court. You have the right to appeal this order to the State Board of
Building Regulations at One Ashburton Place, Boston,Ma.
