Mr. Astroff,
This department has received a serious complaint regarding the egress door at your business.
The complaint alleged that you had to hit a buzzer to allow someone to exit your shop. The salem
police department was able to confirm this situation. Locks and latches are only allowed on
egress doors under very specific criteria. The Massachusetts State Building code 780 C.M.R
section 1017.4 through section 1017.4.5 covers the specifics in which an egress door can be
locked. Unless you can provide documentation from a Code specialist or a Mass Licensed
Architect, you are directed to cease locking the egress at your shop. You are directed to contact
this office upon receipt of this letter to discuss your proposed(fix). If you have any questions,
contact me directly.Failure to comply will result in Municipal code tickets and further
enforcement actions.
If you feel you are aggrieved by my code interpretation, or by this action, you must file an Appeal
with the Board of Buildings,Regulations and Standards in Boston.
