O'Rourke, Inspector of Buildings, City Hall, Salem, Mass, Dear Sir : On March' 18,1960 a Board consisting of:- Neal B. Mitchell, City Engineer; William R. Hart, (Acting) Fire Chief; and Frank A. Gallagher , appointed by the Inspector of Buildings,- did make a careful survey of the premises at number 5 Mason Street, in accordance with Chapter 143 of the general Laws. The Board observed an unused, uninhabited and apparently abandoned three story wood frame building with neariy all its windows and its skylight either broken or missing. All floors were exposed to the weather. The sagging floors and ceilings indicate that this condition has existed for a considerable length of time. The opinion of this Board is:- that there is no economic justification for the repair of this building to its original useful condition;: that it is an unused, uninhabited, and for all intentional purposes an abandoned building; that it has been, and is now, open to the weather such that rain and snow continually weakens the structure and will eventually make it dangerous to enter in the event of fire; and in the interest of public safety,- that this building should be properly secured, or be removed. Therefore , the Board unaminously upholds the order of the Inspector of Buildings. For the City of Salem, City Engineer - Acting Fire Chief Appoint e . .
