(508)229-0900 FAX: (508)229-2279 29 March 1999 Finn Bros Co. 10 Front Street Beverly, Massachusetts 01915 Attention: Mr. Thomas Finn RE: New House Foundation fqa JW Marlborough Road Salem, Massachusetts GCI Project No. 991518 Dear Mr. Thomas Finn: At your requested, we have completed an inspection and evaluation of the subgrade soil and foundation conditions at the above referenced property. This letter summarizes the results of our inspections and observations made on the dates indicated. The site is located west of Marlborough Road in the town of Salem, Massachusetts. Proposed construction will be a two-story wood framed house with a full basement. The design calls for the building to be founded on shallow spread footings, cast-in-place foundation walls and wood framing. At your request, two site inspections were made. On 17 March 1999 our first inspection was made by a staff geotechnical engineer. At the time of our inspection the site had been excavated; the footings and foundation walls already cast. The soil removed from the excavation was stockpiled outside the foundation walls. The stockpiled material was observed to contain a mixture of loam and glacial till. Glacial till is a heterogenous mixture of clay sized particles, sand and gravel, and cobbles. Except for the southeast corner, the footings had been cast on top of exposed bedrock. Since the actual nature of the subgrade in the southeast corner and the extent ,,,--of any existing root material could not be determined during this visit, it was decided that hand dug test pits in the footing locations should be done to expose the conditions and allow an -assessment of subsurface soil conditions. On 23 March 1999 the site was inspected for the second time. As requested, shallow test pits had been dug and were sufficient to assess the subgrade conditions. The underlying soil consisted of ° coarse to fine sand with some coarse to fine gravel and occasional cobbles. No organic soils, nor any fills were observed. Given the conditions observed at the footing subgrade and the light loads of the proposed structure, the subgrade soils are adequate for support of the new footings. 133 East Main Street • Marlborough, Massachusetts 01752 New House Foundation 133 Marlborough Road Salem,Massachusetts GCI Project No.991518 Page#2 We trust the foregoing is sufficient for your immediate needs.
