Sub grade improvements continued within proposed roadway areas located at the South side of proposed building 2. The area was carried down to approximate elevation 1.75' utilizing the Deere 450 excavator equipped with a flat cutting edge (flared teeth) to minimize sub grade disturbance. The selected elevation corresponds with 2' below the lowest utility run in the area. Grades and layout was performed by Pitt Pipeline. The sub grade soil in this area is fill, specifically tannin bark. Groundwater was present. De watering was performed as necessary to maintain semi dry sub grade conditions. A layer of geogrid was placed atop the sub grade to improve stability. Compaction of the sub grade will not be feasible due to the wet organic sub grade soils. An approximately 12 - 18" thick layer of 2" crushed stone was placed and graded. The surface of the stone was tamped into place utilizing the excavator bucket. The area was filled placing 12 - 18" thick lifts of 2" minus processed gravel. Each lift was compacted employing a minimum of 6 passes of coverage utilizing the IR 10 ton drum roller exhibiting stable/firm conditions. The work completed on this date was performed in accordance with the recommendations provided in email correspondence by Kevin Martin of KMM; the geotechnical engineer of record. Footing trench excavation continued within the limits of proposed building #2 along column line 12 from G - F (see sketch). The trench was excavated to design elevation utilizing the Deere 450 excavator equipped with a flat cutting edge (flared teeth) to minimize sub grade disturbance. Ground improvements were recently completed in this area by installing GCC deep foundation elements. The area was over excavated 6" below design BOF elevation to provide a cushion/base of material between the elements and Page 2 5 Richardson Lane, Stoneham, MA 02180 781-438-7755 (Voice) 781-438-6216 (Fax) Report Date 07-01-2019Soil Inspection Report Report No.4 Distribution Copy Job Number 23418 Project Halstead Salem Station, 72 Flint Street Salem, MA Contractor Fulcrum Associates the footing. All GCC elements were carefully located and exposed during excavation. One pier location was chipped down to provide the adequate crushed stone base thickness. The sub grade soil in this area is fill and varies in consistency from clay to organic silt with wood to tannin bark. Groundwater was present. A layer of Mirafi 160 filter fabric was placed atop the sub grade as specified. Compaction of the sub grade will not be feasible due to the wet organic sub grade soils. A 6" thick layer of ¾" crushed stone was placed and graded. The surface of the stone was compacted utilizing the 200 Lb. plate compactor generally exhibiting stable/firm conditions.
