On the first matter, as the building owner we had originally planned to provide for recessed illuminated signs similar to the signage at the Hawthorne Building. However, in the course of the facade renovation it became necessary to place a 6 x 6 structural steel column in the center of each window opening. This negated the ability to provide for a recessed sign. As an alternative we decided to provide an area above the windows for tenants to place signage(to avoid any drilling into masonry). The center panel is slightly recessed (as much as could be given the structural columns behind), whereas the two end panels are almost flush with the outside face of the glass. It was always our intention to have the tenant's utilize the center panel for signage, but still allow the side panels to be available if the tenant so decided. In the case of the sign for Biscotti Cucina, what was proposed to the Board originally was exactly what we had envisioned for the sign panel. It is my understanding that the Board does not want the tenant to increase the size of her sign (i.e. the name Biscotti Cucina would remain the same as proposed),but that the size of the sign cabinet be increased to the full length of the window opening. I have discussed this with both our tenant,who is also my cousin,and with Ed from United Sign,and to fabricate such a cabinet would more than triple the cost of the sign and would cause the sign to project a full 6 inches out from the face of the brick (as opposed to only 3-4 inches for proposed sign). Not only would this be an economic hardship to our tenant, after all she is a new business and has limited resources, but as the owner of the building we have a strong preference to the original proposed sign package. We would respectfully request the Board to reconsider and give approval to the original proposed sign package for Biscotti Cucina. An Electrical Permit must be obtained from the City of Salem Electrical Department,48 Lafayette Street,and be submitted with the sign application before a sign permit will be issued. Also, please be aware that any sign or awning hung over a public way or sidewalk shall require a surety bond in the sum of one thousand dollars($1,000.00)conditioned to save harmless the City from any claims. This bond must be placed on file in the City Clerk's office.
