SRA Decision
At their meeting on March 12, 2008, the SRA voted to approve the February 26,
2008 DRB recommendation for the proposed modifications to the approved
awning scheme located at 211 Washington Street.
DRB Recommendation
At their meeting on February 26, 2008, the DRB voted to recommend approval of
the proposed modification to the approved awning scheme with the following
conditions:
• The lettering shall be the name only without contact information;
• The lettering shall be on the hard-framed valance portion of the awning;
and
• The letters will be a maximum of 5 inches tall.
Proposal
The proposal is to add lettering to the awning valance. This is a change to the
September 26, 2007 DRB recommendation and October 9, 2007 SRA approval.
Past SRA/DRB Actions
October 9, 2007: The SRA voted to approve the September 26, 2007 DRB
recommendation for the proposed awnings and sign brackets at 191-211
Washington Street with the additional condition that all awnings of one color will
be installed at the same time.
September 26, 2007: The DRB voted to approve the proposed awnings and sign
brackets with the following conditions:
• The sides of the awnings shall be open
• At the corner storefronts, the awnings shall be installed on the New Derby
Street and Dodge Street fagade as well as the Washington Street fagade
• The awning color scheme shall be as follows:
■ New Derby Street awnings shall be blue
• The 4 awnings at the left side of the Washington St. fagade shall be
blue
■ The 3 awnings at the center of the Washington St. fagade shall be
red
■ The 1 awning at the right of the Washington St. facade shall be
green

Dear Salem Redevelopment Authority Board Members:
On behalf of the owner of the Hawthorne Building, and as part of our efforts to assist current tenants at
this location by increasing visibility, we hereby seek your permission for the attached alteration to the
previously approved awning scheme. This alteration includes the addition of lettering to the front of the
awning.
The Design Review Board approved the aforementioned alteration with minor stipulations at the February
27, 2008 meeting. Upon approval by this authority, we plan to work with these tenants as diligently as
possible to begin this work.
Please find the attached rendering and specifications for the proposed lettering as well as a rendering of
the previously approved awning scheme.

previously approved awning scheme. The only alteration to the original design is the addition of a small
amount of lettering to each awning as shown in the rendering.
Upon Board approval, this tenant will be given a deadline to install the proposed awning and signage
within the near future.
We have attached a rendering of the proposed modifications as well as the rendering previously approved
by the Board.
