148 WASHINGTON STREET- JOSHUA WARD HOUSE DRB RENOVATION 1995
LBRenovationa Ward Houseashington St. J STALEY McDERMET ASSOCIATES PRESERVATION&RESTORATION ARCHITECTURE 175 Essex Street Salem,Massachusetts 01970-3726 (508)745-4969 DATE: December 13, 1995 TO: ►°The Salem Redevelopment Authority& Salem Design Review Board-Ellen Dubinsky The Massachusetts Historical Commission -Paul Holtz, Historical Architect FROM: Staley McDermet Associates - Staley McDermet COPIES: Higginson Genealogical Books - Robert Murphy PROJECT: The Joshua Ward House, 148 Washington Street, Salem, Mass. SUBJECT: Reproduction of Reproduction Roof Balustrade Approval is requested to reproduce the Joshua Ward House roof balustrade that was installed during the major restoration in 1979 and later removed because of severe deterioration. The following drawings are enclosed: 1. DRAWING A-5: WEST AND NORTH ELEVATIONS, dated April 11, 1979, which includes BALUSTRADE DETAILS, Number 11/A-5. 2. MODIFICATIONS TO DWG. A-5. 8'/z x 11 drawing dated Dec. 12, 1995, showing proposed changes to Detail 11/A-5. 3. NEW ROOF BALUSTER drawing dated December 12, 1995. Comments: 1. Although drawing A-5 shows only the west and north elevations, please note that the balustrade will be installed on all four sides of the top portion of the roof. This drawing has been submitted as it shows the original detail, as well as the balustrade's location on the roof. 2. The balusters themselves will be half-balusters as opposed to the full balusters that were installed in 1979. The top and bottom rails will be adjusted accordingly. This method of construction has been used as an economy measure, and has precedents in Salem in the roof balustrades at the Gardner-Pingree House and Peirce-Nichols House, both by Samuel McIntire. 3. The profile of the roof baluster itself has been refined to be more historically accurate. 4. The paint color will match the color of the trim. If you should have any questions, please feel free to call me. Thank you for your time. SM/sb 57.'wigE is 7REPEFom wt6keL. 4x 5".'`-ter a 1W 5q, "[PJM .
