SALEM MARKETPLACE TREE REMOVAL 2000 Salk., M-YetpGcc -- ree Re,..r Oe- G --- I oSalem Redevelopment Authority August 7, 2000 City of Salem Market and Tourist Commission c/o Richard Bencal, Staff Administrator One Salem Green Salem, MA 01970 Dear Mr. Bencal: On Thursday, July 20, 2000 the Design Review Board met in open session and discussed your application to remove the mulberry tree at the Market Place located across from the Lobster Shanty. The Board recommended that a specific tree variety be chosen and the size of the caliper and root ball be investigated, since there appears to be a limited planting area. The Board also recommended that a Norway maple not be considered. Once this information is provided and approved, the Board will favorably recommend your request to the Salem Redevelopment Authority. A member of the Planning Department staff and Design Review Board, Don Giard, has volunteered to assist you in selecting the appropriate size and variety of tree. Please contact him at your earliest convenience to begin this process. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. This tree, located across from the Lobster Shanty, is a liability waiting to occur for the City. The berries are slippery when they fall from this tree to the walkway creating a dangerous situation. In addition, when the berries are walked on they are pressed into the walkway creating a noticeable discoloration of the concrete and bricks in the area. The Commission is asking for permission to have this tree removed and replaced with a type more appropriate, such as maple, that does not have berries dropping from it. I thank you in advance for you consideration of this request. Very truly yours, Az Richard A.
