SRA Decision At its meeting on June 14, 2017 the Salem Redevelopment Authority voted unanimously (3-0) to approve the proposed improvements to the playground area (small project review) at 1 Sewell Street (YMCA), conditional upon the applicant returning to the DRB for review and approval of the proposed shed/trellis structure. Recommendation At its meeting on May 24, 2017 the Design Review Board voted unanimously (7-0) to recommend approval of the proposed improvements to the playground area (small project review) at 1 Sewall Street (YMCA), conditional upon the applicant returning to the DRB for review/approval of the shed and trellis structure (to review details such as: material, paint, construction method), and that the applicant seek guidance from the City's Building Department as to the need for a higher curb separating the playground from the adjacent parking lot to protect from incursions by automobiles. Proposal Enclosed are photos, renderings, and drawings that depict proposed improvements to the YMCA's playground area on the Sewell Street side of its building. A sloped concrete walk will be installed to lead to a shed and arbor and a synthetic turf lawn. A 4' high black metal fence will replace the existing chain link fence. Drawings for the arbor and shed, as well as new double doors are shown on the last page of the packet. Staff Comment The applicant conferred with the Building Commissioner and shared the enclosed package with him. He provided his verbal approval for the project and noted that they are not required to provide a guard rail. That said, the applicant and Building Commissioner both share the concern for better protection of the play area, as first expressed by the DRB; therefore they will erect a wooden guard rail in front of the play area.
