Salem Redevelopment Authority DESIGN REVIEW BOARD PROPOSAL June 27, 2007 Griffen Theater (7 Lynde Street— Review of temporary facade alteration PROPOSAL: The proposal includes the temporary installation of a replica 1630 New England house on the ground floor facade of 7 Lynde Street. The proposed materials include rough sawn spruce, masonite board and thatch. RECEIVE® Erik Rodenhiser JUN 1 8 2007 Griffen Theatre 7 Lynde Street DEPT. OF PLANNING& 978 317 1169 ry COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT THE GRIFFEN THEATD F7 Proposal, plans and information for historic outdoor temporary display. The Griffen Theatre is an intimate sixty-seat theatre on Lynde Street, which does a variety of plays, shows, special engagements and children's programs. During the tourist season (mid June through October) it houses a show catered to tourists, which is the main source of income for the theatre. The front of the building is fairly plain and fails to draw the attention of passersby, especially from across the street. I propose to have a professionally designed and historically accurate temporary display for the entrance of the theatre that depicts a home from approximately 1630. Similar to pioneer village and Jamestown, this pleasant, whimsical and historic display would give tourists a taste of what architecture would have looked like in the early years, plus attract the much needed attention to the theatre and the program inside. Thomas Amsler, a respected and professional architect from the Boston area, who also designed the tower at ogan airport, has made the plans for this display and will be responsible for overseeing the project to completion. The fabrication is simple and completely modular to accommodate easy removal and storage during the off-season. Building materials for this project consist of 1x4 inch rough sawn spruce (ledger board) for the wood frame of the house, and masonite board for the panels that make up the structure. The top of the house is made up of"thatching" material cut and altered to give the look of a thatched roof. The temporary display would be up from mid June through October. Enclosed you will find photos of the building, an illustration of the intended display location, architectural drawings of the display showing all sides, and a photo example of the finished project.
