132 Essex Street
Salem, MA 01970
Dear Mr. Saarnio:
Recently, it has come to the attention of the Salem Historical
Commission that additional signage has been installed in various
locations at the Essex Institute museum neighborhood location which
is located within a local historic district. According to our
records, the signage, their location and the structures which
anchor them have not been approved by the Commission.
Several months ago, the Peabody and Essex Museum represented
that these were temporary structures . However, according to the
City of Salem Sign Ordinance, temporary signs are those pertaining
to special sales or events and last no more than fifteen days . If
the signs were temporary, the Commission would still have authority
over such conditions as to duration of use, location, lighting,
removal and similar matters as the Commission may reasonably
specify as per the Salem Historical Commission Ordinance.
Please read the enclosed information and kindly file the
appropriate application within 30 days . If you need assistance,
please contact our staff person, Jane Guy, at the Salem Planning
Department, One Salem Green, Salem, MA (745-9595 , Ext. 311 ) .
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Sincerely,
L c
