SRA Decision
At their meeting on October 14, 2009, the SRA voted to approve the September
23, 2009 DRB recommendation for the proposed signage, windows, and door at
232 Essex Street.
DRB Recommendation
At their meeting on September 23, 2009, the DRB voted to recommend approval
of the proposal with the following conditions:
- The sign band shall be divided into three panels;
- The sign letters shall be spaced appropriately in the center panel;
- The proposal showing the new text on the awnings shall be reviewed and
approved at a future meeting; and
- The windows shall be white as presented.
The DRB encourages the applicant to consider adding a sign on the Washington
Street fagade.
Staff Comment
The proposal has been revised to comply with the DRB conditions.

Proposal
The proposal includes a new sign on the sign band, new lettering on the existing
awnings, painting, new windows, and a new door.
The new sign is proposed as 15 letters in hunter green with two 8" round
decorative accents. The text on the existing awnings would be replaced with new
text, and the sign band is proposed to be painted a light brown. The windows
would be replaced with a new system that includes an operable awning window.
The entry door would be replaced with a new aluminum entry door and sidelight.

Re: Fountain Place
At its meeting of September 16,2009,the Salem Historical Commission reviewed the plans proposed
for storefront renovations at 232 Essex Street. The Commission's role is to comment on the proposed
alterations that are being undertaken using Community Development Block Grant funds. The use of
CDBG funds requires that properties to be rehabilitated will be rehabilitated in accordance with the
recommended approaches in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines
for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings. If the standards cannot be met, project information should be
forwarded to Massachusetts Historical Commission for consultation. The standards can be found at

The Salem Historical Commission offers the following comments:
• Signage—The Commission felt that the signage is out of proportion with the building,and did
not like the large circles on either side of the lettering. They suggest that the owners consider
signage similar to that installed at the Witches Brew at 156 Derby Street,and recommends a dark
green background with white trim with raised (3 dimensional)lettering. The style of lettering should
be more classical, similar to Witches Brew.
• Windows—The Commission recommends that the windows have a bronze finish
• Door—The Commission recommends that the door color match the window color.
• A company such as Waters&Brown could perform a color consult to help select the colors
that will best attract customers,while keeping an appropriate color scheme.
