Walsh Jr., Executive Director 120 Washington Street Salem, Massachusetts 01970 Dear Mr. Walsh; We would like to make an alteration to our property at 231 Essex Street(the headquarters of Digital Bungalow, formerly Daniel Low's). Since this property is within jurisdiction of the Salem Redevelopment Authority, we would like your review and approval. Specifically, as part of our effort to upgrade and modernize this historic structure, we are undertaking work to create an additional "means of egress" from the second floor, in addition to the existing stairs leading to Washington Street and the elevator to Essex Street. We began this work in consultation with the City Building Department by removing the interior"Grand Staircase" to make way for this new egress to the outside; however, we believe we have found a new solution that meets state building code while at the same time preserving the option in the future for rebuilding the traditional Grand Staircase. We would request approval to install a full fire escape leading from the second floor down to the alley-way between our building and Eastern Bank. Our proposal is at the Concept plan level. We respectfully request the review of the SRA at this early stage to ensure we have a proposal that will meet code as well as meet the approval of the Redevelopment Authority.
