RE: Digital Bungalow,231 Essex Street—Proposed Fire Escape
Dear Mr. Cluistoudias:
As you are aware, the proposed installation of a full fire escape leading from the second
floor down to the alley adjacent to your property at 231 Essex Street received Schematic
Design Approval by the Salem Redevelopment Authority(SRA) on November 12,2003.
The next milestone for this project, in the SRA review process, is Final Design Review. The
Final Design Review submission should include a full set of construction plans, final
building materials,proposed lighting,color samples, and a landscaping plan,if applicable.
Enclosed is a schedule of upcoming SRA meetings, including the deadlines for submission.
When you are ready to submit final plans, please contact the SRA so we may assist you.
Feel free to contact me at 978/745-9595 x311 if you have questions regarding the review
process or the requirements of the SRA.

Dear Mr. Walsh;
We would like to make an alteration to our property at 231 Essex Street(the headquarters of
Digital Bungalow, formerly Daniel Low's). Since this property is within jurisdiction of the Salem
Redevelopment Authority, we would like your review and approval.
Specifically, as part of our effort to upgrade and modernize this historic structure, we are
undertaking work to create an additional "means of egress" from the second floor, in addition to
the existing stairs leading to Washington Street and the elevator to Essex Street. We began this
work in consultation with the City Building Department by removing the interior"Grand Staircase"
to make way for this new egress to the outside; however, we believe we have found a new
solution that meets state building code while at the same time preserving the option in the future
for rebuilding the traditional Grand Staircase.
We would request approval to install a full fire escape leading from the second floor down to the
alley-way between our building and Eastern Bank.
Our proposal is at the Concept plan level. We respectfully request the review of the SRA at this
early stage to ensure we have a proposal that will meet code as well as meet the approval of the
Redevelopment Authority.
Sincerely,
a,
