230 Essex Street (Urban Elements): Proposed signage
SRA Decision
At their meeting on September 10, 2008, the SRA voted to approve the August
20, 2008 DRB recommendation.
DRB Recommendation
At their meeting on August 20, 2008, the DRB voted to recommend approval of
the proposed blade sign, window lettering, and flags with the condition that the
flags be reduced in size to approximately 2' by 3'.
Staff Comment
The proposal was modified slightly prior to the DRB meeting, and the blade sign
will be 3' by 2'. The applicant subsequently decided to only install one rainbow
flag and not the "open" flag.
Proposal
The proposal consists of one blade sign that will be hung in an existing bracket,
window lettering, and two flags that will be placed in existing flag pole brackets.
The sign is 3' by 2'-4" and is made of W thick sign foam. The sign background is
black. The Urban Elements name and logo will be raised off of the background.
The lettering is white and the logo is green. The hardware used to hang the sign
will be painted black. The sign's square footage complies with City and SRA
guidelines.
The window lettering is white and has no background. The business name and
logo will be slightly above center on the window. A revised version of the lettering
will be presented at the DRB meeting showing the words "nature + home + body
+ mind" at the bottom of the window. The lettering area is less than 20 percent of
the window glass and complies with City and SRA guidelines.
The two flags are a red, white, and blue flag with the word "Open" and a rainbow
pride flag. The existing brackets are white and the flag poles will be white. The
SRA Sign Manual allows for flags provided they are set at an angle that is
between the horizontal plane and 60°.
