The Gathering and Digital Imaging (221 Essex Street) — Rear egress door
SRA DECISION:
At their meeting on July 11, 2007, the SRA voted to approve the DRB
Recommendation for the proposed egress door located at the rear of 221 Essex
Street.
RECOMMENDATION:
At their meeting on June 27, 2007, the DRB recommended approval of the
proposed egress door with the condition that the selected brick be reviewed on-
site with a DRB member prior to installation.
PROPOSAL:
The proposal includes the installation of an egress door at the rear of 221 Essex
Street. This door will serve as a second means of egress for The Gathering (221
Essex Street) and Digital Imaging (217 Essex Street) as required by MA State
Building code. The proposed exit is adjacent to Derby Square. The proposed door
is a black painted metal panel door with brick infill at each side of the door
opening.

Dear Board Members;
I am providing the attached submittal on behalf of my client Park Towers
Management, the owner of the existing buildings located on 217 and 221 Essex Street,
for your review,
We are proposing to Install a new exterior door to accommodate a second "means of
egress" located on the first floor at the back alley of 221 Essex Street.
1 was initially hire by Tom Carpi of Park Towers Management Co. to provide an analysis
of the "means of egress" for the existing buildings at the request of Joseph Barbeau,
the Building Inspector for the City of Salem. Our findings determined a second exit for
the first floor is needed in order to meet current egress requirements per the MA State
Building Code.
The attached submittal includes a proposed design providing the second means of
egress with an internal half stair, stair landing, and exterior exit door, A portion of an
existing brick wall and granite header will need to be removed in order to install a new
door. The door will be a metal panel door used for egress only and will be painted
black to match the adjacent door and metal work. Brick infill to either side of the jamb
will match the adjacent brick.
