Walsh + ,Llllit.1U Executive Director Salem Redevelopment Authority FEB 2 5 2004 120 Washington Street ' Salem, MA 01970 Re: Second Floor Window Replacement 185 Essex Street Dear Mr. Walsh: My client, Myer Dana & Sons is planning to renovate the second floor of 185 Essex Street. The present ten wood windows (with the exception of one) are in need of replacement. It is our intent to remove and replace nine windows with single hung wood sash with clear insulated glass. The corner sash is curved. This frame is suitable for repair and the present plexiglas panel shall be removed and replaced with new curved glass. All material down to the masonry opening and the cast stone sill shall be removed. We will be replacing the wood sill, frames, sash and trim and anchoring same into the existing masonry. We would like the SRA to approve our initiative and expect to apply for a building permit as soon as the SRA approves the submitted design. In support of our initiative and in response to the SRA I am enclosing the following: 01. Seven (7) copies of the Second Floor Plan 02. Seven (7) copies of the head, jamb and sill details for the proposed new wood sash. The sash are to be manufactured by Pella Windows. 03. Exhibit 1 , side view of the building showing the entrance to the second floor (looking down Central Street). 04. Exhibit 2, partial front view with 185 Essex Street in the foreground (looking toward the Peabody Essex Museum) 05. Exhibit 3, detail comparison of existing windows and adjacent Essex Street windows 06. Exhibit 4, view of typical window elevation 07. Exhibit 5, Internal view of typical jamb on side of building. Note decay and missing pieces 1 08. Exhibit 6, Internal view of sill showing decayed wood 09. Exhibit 7, Internal view of sill facing Essex street. Note existing cast stone sill on which the new wood sill shall be placed. The color we are proposing is a green of a historic palette, very similar to the present window color, Benjamin Moore, semi gloss finish no 634. A color chip is attached for your approval. Given the condition of the existing windows, my client would like to order the wood replacement windows as soon as possible. If this request could be approved by the Salem Redevelopment Authority without Design Review Board review it would expedite the replacement process and allow Myer Dana & Sons to lease up the space in question. I believe our submission states the case appropriately. Please advise if additional information is required, and extend my best wishes to your staff for their help and cooperation during the early phases of this proposal. Thank you. Sin ere , Ber ar .
