"Stickwork" Sculpture by Patrick Douaherty at PEM
This is a proposal to produce PEM's Rist outdoor installation in May 2015.For the past 30 years, artist Patrick Dougherty
(www.stickwork.net)has combined elemental building techniques and a deep knowledge of nature to create organic
"stickwork"sculptures that are fantastical, inviting, and experiential. Each deceptively spacious nest-like sculpture blurs the
lines between architecture, landscape, and art, embodying global mythologies and local histories, while inspiring personal,
cross-cultural,and cross-disciplinary connections.
Tree saplings of various sizes are the sole material Dougherty uses to build his sculptures. After harvesting the saplings to
construct the basic frame of the structure,he deploys their tapering forms to animate the sculptural form.
Dougherty's ephemeral works become cherished installations within the communities that help them into being. Each sculpture
is realized within a 3-week timeframe through a collaborative process that requires assistance from local volunteers. The
collaborative nature of Dougherty's process and the proposed location on PEM's campus affords the opportunity to explore
diverse programming opportunities including local community outreach and connection to Salem's public arts initiative.
Dougherty, with an extensive international reputation, produces some 10 to 12 site-specific projects a year across the United
States and Europe. He has created over 250 such sculptures since 1980 at an enormously diverse range of institutions and sites.
A selection of these works is featured in a 2010 monograph Stickwork, published by Princeton Architectural Press and in the
2013 documentary film Bending Sticks: The Sculpture of Patrick Dougherty by Penelope Maunsell and Kenny Dalsheimer.
Select past and future projects include:
• Atelier 340 Muzeum,Brussels,Belgium,2000
• The Contemporary Art Museum,Honolulu,2003
• North Carolina Museum of Art,Raleigh,2009
• Dumbarton Oaks,Washington,DC,2010
• Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire,France,2012
• U.S.Embassy,Belgrade,Serbia,2013
• Hands On Children's Museum,Olympia,WA,2013
• Deokpyeong Ecoland,Seoul,Korea,2013
• National Tropical Botanical Garden,Koloa,HI,2014
• Installation in Renwick Gallery,DC(to celebrate reopening)(2015 TBD)
• Astrid Lindgren Gardens,Vimmerby,Sweden,2016
Installation site:
The artist and PEM staff has identified the Crowninshield-Bentley House(ca. 1727)yard(at the comer of Hawthorne Blvd.
and Essex St.)as the best site for this installation. This location provides visibility, proximity to the main museum building,
and good logistical access for construction. As well,a sculpture in this location:
• Will have direct contact with the large tree on the front lawn
• Spark an interesting material conversation between the historic wooden house and the sapling structure. Also,
by siting a contemporary work in the context of PEM's historic houses it speaks to the museum's interest in
drawing connections between past and present. The sculpture, however, will not come in direct physical
contact with the house.
• Offers an opportunity for high visibility along Hawthorne Blvd.,with an out-of-view staging area for sapling
material in the adjacent barn and parking area.
• Signage will utilize the existing banner frame for the Crowninshield-Bentley House. The replacement banner
will include a description of the project,a QR code that links to PEM's exhibition page for Stickwork, and
public access hours(lam to 7pm).
• Is enclosed by a property fence and gate, which will deter visitors from entering the structure afterhours.
• The sculpture will be illuminated in subdued lighting at night, via in-ground and pole-mounted lights. These
lights will be placed in a manner that is sensitive to abutters and other neighbors.
• The 12-16'high sculpture will extend from the large tree outwards into the courtyard in a series of 5 to 7
connected structural pods.It will not extend beyond the boundary of the fence.
