Re: Sign Application
Dear Mr. Greenstein:
I am writing on behalf of the Salem Redevelopment Authority (SRA) in regard to your
application for a sign permit. As you know, the SRA agreed to grant you temporary approval
for a sign permit, with the condition that a new sign or awning design be submitted within a
three month time period. In addition, the SRA required that the existing A-frame sign be
removed from the sidewalk in front of the store (see attached copy of decision).
At the present time, you have not complied with any of the conditions placed upon your
approval and therefore, you are in violation of the City of Salem Sign Ordinance.
I urge you to correct this situation immediately in order to avoid further action by the
Salem Redevelopment Authority and the City of Salem Building Inspector. If you have
questions regarding the SRA decision or this letter, please contact Kim Driscoll in the Salem
Planning Department at 745-9595 ext. 311.
Thank you for your consideration'in this matter.

DESIGN REVIEW BOARD
RECOMMENDATIONS
JULY 21, 1993
D & J Footwear - 324 Derby Street - Sign Application
Mr. Jerry Greenstein appeared before the DRB with an application to
erect a 2' x 6' metal painted sign over the entranceway to his
business. The sign has a white background and black letters. A
second sign, approximately 2' x 2' will be placed on the side of his
entrance, as shown. (Note: Mr. Greenstein was cited by the Building
Inspector for having an unpermitted sign. )
DRB RECOMMENDATION: Approve the side on the side of the building and
the entrance sign for a three month period with
the conditions that the entrance sign be
centered in the bay and that a new sign/awning
design be submitted within the three month
period. The Board also asked the building owner
to remove the A-frame sign from the sidewalk.
The Board also requested that a letter be sent
by the Building Inspector to the owner
requesting that the Body Works sign be removed,
since the business is no longer operational.
The Board also requested that SRA staff send a
letter to the owner asking him to attend a
meeting to discuss tenant signage policies for
his building.
Deschamps Printing - Dodge Street - Sign Application
An application was presented for a 48" x 32" right angle sign to be
erected on the teal panels over the garage entrance. The sign has a
white background with teal lettering.
DRB RECOMMENDATION: Approve the sign to be centered on the brick
pier between the existing window and the garage
door. This sign is approved temporarily until
facade improvements are made to the building.

RE: D & J Footwear Sign Application
DATE: October 28, 1993
Attached is a letter to the owner of D & J Footwear
regarding his illegal sign. The owner,.Mr.
Greenstein, came before the DRB in July after he
was cited by the Building Dept. as having an
unpermitted sign. Mr. Greenstein was extremely
rude to the DRB members and unwilling to
compromise. However, after a lengthy discussion
the DRB granted a temporary approval with the
condition that a new sign design be presented within
three months. This would provide Mr. Greenstein
with an opportunity to,maintain a sign for his
business, while designing an alternative sign or
awning which was more appropriate for the Derby
Street area. At the present time, Mr. Greenstein
has not come forth with a new sign design, thus I
would like to forward the attached letter. Please
