Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, G.L. c. 1 31 , §40

Conservation Commission make a determination as to whether the area, described below• or work to
be performed on said area.also described below• is subject to the jurisdiction OI the Wetlands
Protection Act. G.L e. 131• §40.
2. The area Is described as follows. (Use maps or plans, if necessary• to provide a description and the
location of the area subject to this request.)
There are three sites shown on- Figures 1 and 2 .
Location: Street Address 1 ) City land Pierce Road; 2) city land Pigs Island
and 3) 24 Fort Avenue
LO: Number.
At each site , work will be confined to buffer zones of coastal
banks (sites 2 and 3)and salt marsh (1 ) .
Tne work In said area Is described below. (Use additional paper. it necessar y. to describe the
proposed work.)
At each site, a 4-6 ' deep hole will be dug; a telephone pole with
a 4 ' square plywood platform on top will be placed at the lower
end of the buffer zone at each site. These poles and platforms
will serve as potential nesting sites for Osprey. This project is
Sponsored by the Salem Rotary Club and is being carried out with
the authorization and support of the Osprey Recovery Project of
the Massachusetts. division of Fisheries and Wildlife (see Attachment I) .

Enclosed olease find 10 oosters featurino the Osorev Recovery
Project. The ohotoo_ raoh shows an active osorev nest on a oole the
Division erected in the town of Fairhaven on Buzzard ' s Bay . This
structure is similar to what we oroDose to erect on the island in
Salem Harbor and in the marsh on town conservation orooertv . The
ooles would be 15 to 10 feet hioh and be su000rted by three braces
near the base. The nest itself would be su000rted by two cross-
arms and a hardwood oallet . -
I will olan to orovide all the materials necessary to erect the two
smaller nest ooles . If the utilitv comoanv has Class 9 ( 20 ' ) Doles
or the eouivalent available they could be used at these two sites.
Otherwise . I have suitable ooles on order that I am able to carry
on a trailer. I will also orovide the oallet for the third Salem
Dole. or000sed for the oower station dike. I would ask that
Massachusetts Electric provide the Dole ( standard 35 ' ) . cross-arms .
hardware and line truck for this installation .
Please forward a coov of the poster to Huah Mullioan and Drovide
