Ms. Nina Cohen Chair,Zoning Board of Appeals City Hall Annex 120 Washington Street Salem,MA 01970 Dear Ms. Cohen: I am writing to express my strong support of the housing development proposed by the Salem Harbor CDC at 50 Palmer St. There is a huge need for affordable homeownership opportunities in Salem, where the median sales price of condominiums was$261,500 in Apri1, 2004. Regular, hard working families cannot realize the American dream of owning their own home. The CDC will be offering nine families the chance to put down roots in their community and to take pride in their home. These will be families with incomes of$45,000 to $65,000, and preference will be given to Salem residents. These families deserve a chance to have a home of their own. I also strongly support the development proposal because it will be good for the community. I have seen the drawings of the proposed housing and know that it will make Congress Street much more attractive. Further, the development will serve to get rid of the old Keefe's restaurant building which only has a negative impact on the area. This is a rare opportunity to have a significant positive effect on a part of the City which really needs a boost. I have attended meetings where Salem Harbor CDC has presented the proposed housing plans to the community, and have witnessed only positive sentiments. Everyone has been very supportive of the plans. I ask that you too, support this wonderful opportunity to improve the neighborhood and to offer attractive, affordable ownership housing for first time homebuyers. Salem Harbor Community Development Corporation has spoken to the city concerning their proposed project at 50 Palmer Street and we are excited to see potential redevelopment of this site. The proposed project is located in Salem's Point neighborhood at the location of the former Keefe's Restaurant. This parcel has been vacant for several years and has become a blight on the surrounding area. Redevelopment of the parcel into an active vibrant use would create a positive addition to the neighborhood and improve the streetscape. Furthermore, the development of affordable housing on the site will assist in providing a variety of housing opportunities which are needed in the city. We look forward to working with the Salem Harbor Community Development Corporation as they develop their plansand elevations for this potential development. This is an unique opportunity to improve a vacant site and provide new housing in the Point Neighborhood. Thank you for your consideration and please feel free to contact me at the Department of Planting and Community Development at (978) 745-9595, extension 31 1 if you have any questions. We think that the new, affordable ownership housing will be a good thing for the neighborhood. In addition, demolishing the empty restaurant building and replacing it with attractive housing will make a huge improvement on the appearance of the neighborhood. Staff from the Salem Harbor CDC showed us the preliminary drawings of what the housing will look like, and we are very much in support of the project. We hope you will support the CDC's 50 Palmer St. proposal. Sincerely, June 16, 2004 Ms. Nina Cohen Chair, Zoning Board of Appeals 120 Washington St. Salem, MA 01970 Dear Chairperson Cohen: I am writing to express my support for the development of new housing proposed by the Salem Harbor CDC at 50 Palmer Street. My husband and I purchased the single family house next door to the restaurant site in 2001 and do not like having a vacant building next door. Salem Harbor CDC staff showed me the development plans for the project and I like the way it looks. I think new housing for first time homebuyers will be a good thing for the neighborhood. There is a need for affordable ownership housing in Salem, and this will create an opportunity for people to put down roots in the neighborhood and make it a nicer place to live. I hope you will look favorably upon the 50 Palmer St. proposal.
