Cohen: I would like to be recorded as strongly opposed to the petition of John P. Vasiliou, requesting a Variance from required parking of four and one half parking spaces to allow on-site parking of three spaces for use of the premises as a three unit dwelling for the property located at 5 Leavitt Court (B-1) . I do not believe this is in the best interest of public safety which would be detrimental to the neighborhood. Yours truly, / u !L , / ✓✓✓SARAH M. HAYES COUNCILLOR WARD SIX 7 Leavitt Court Salem, MA 01970 January 11, 1999 Board of Appeals One Salem Green Salem, MA 01970 RE: 5 Leavitt Court, Salem MA Dear Sir or Madam: I am writing in regard to the petition of John Vasiliou to turn a 2 family dwelling into a 3 family dwelling at 5 Leavitt Court in Salem. I am strongly opposed to allowing this to go forward as Leavitt Court is an extremely small and narrow dead and street that has absolutely no on street parking. The current tenants in this house use up all of the driveway space available and there is no more room to accommodate any more cars. I think you should definitely take the parking situation under advisement when making a decision about granting this petition. Sincerely, J` yPoodsiaz 644& /X, dfii- Elizabeth M. Woods Owners, 7 Leavitt Court Fisherman's Reality Trust 121 North St. Salem, Massachusetts 01970 11 January 1999 City of Salem Board of Appeals One Salem Green Salem, Massachusetts 01970 Dear Board Members; I am writing this letter in regards to the petition submitted by John P. Vasiliou requesting a variance from required parking of four and one half parking spaces to allow on site parking of three spaces for use of the premises as a three unit dwelling for the property located at 5 Leavitt Court. Leavitt Court is s small Court that is little more than 13 feet wide. Parking is restricted on the street with over half of the-street restricted to no parking on either side. Currently, there are two houses on the Court with an addition four buildings, one of which is my property(Pete's Bait&Tackle Shop)abutting the Court. In total there are already ten vehicles that park in driveways or along Leavitt Court. I have owned and operated Pete's Bait for over twenty years and parking has always been a problem along the Court. Hardly a week goes by that the police are not called to tag illegal parkers. Violations include extended parking in a fifteen minute zone in front of my shop, parking in my driveway and parking in the no parking zones along Leavitt Court. This can be verified by calling the Police Department. By allowing additional parking on street, these problems can only get worse. Parking has to be contained to be fair to the rest of the neighborhood. If additional on street parking is allowed by virtue of allowing another housing unit with no off street parking then problems will increase, safety will be jeopardized and police will be spending even more time writing rickets. The reality of the high density of the neighborhood must be taken into consideration along with the already existing parking problems. Further expansion must not be allowed. I am strongly opposed to the variance on the grounds that more on street parking will only expand current parking problems and create safety problems. I trust the Board will do what is right for the neighborhood and deny this variance. erel Y, Peter G Koutrakrs,Trustee u Fisherman's Realty Trust' t ` Peter G. and Lisa J. Koutrakis One Randall St. Leavitt Court is a small Court that is little more than 13 feet wide. Parking is restricted on the street with over half of the street restricted to no parking on either side. Currently, there are two houses on the Court with an addition four buildings., In total there are already ten vehicles that park in driveways or along Leavitt Court. I have lived at One Randall St. for ten years now and parking on Leavitt Court has always been a problem. People have blocked the street, blocked my driveway and generally have little regard for the parking restrictions that are posted. These problems can be verified by calling the Police Department. There have been rimes within the past month that the police have been called twice in one day because cars have been parked in the restricted areas blocking my driveway. Adding more cars to the already congested street will only compound the parking problems. Mr.Vasiliou has done an exceptional job rehabilitating the property at 5 Leavitt Court. I can sympathize with Mr. Vasiliou's efforts to maximize the return on his investment. To allow additional parking pressure to be placed on an already problem street creating more parking problems, unfairness to neighbors,a safety concern and additional police visits is grossly unjust. Therefor,I must strongly oppose any additional parking pressure on Leavitt Court by allowing an additional housing unit without off street parking. I trust the Board will do what is right and not allow any additional parking pressure to be placed on the already congested Leavitt Court. ' cerely, f'. n Peter&Lisa Koutrakis /A
