RE: 265-267 Lafayette Street
Rear Building/2 Willow Ave
Dear Owners:
I was called by the Salem Fire Department in the early morning today.
The Fire Department was called by your tenant because water was coming through a light
fixture into her apartment.
I met with your tenant this morning and I took a look at the flat roof from the 2 I story
porch of your adjoing property. I was also told that you had workmen there early this
morning to shovel snow of the roof.
I observed an old built up tar roof that showed obvious signs of deterioration. The roof
should be replaced.
However, the State Building Code 780 CMR, Section 103 requires that a property owner
maintain all parts and systems in a safe and operable manner.
Therefore, you are directed to retain the services of a qualified repairman to repair or
replace the roof. Shoveling off the roof does not qualify as a repair.
The work needs to be done within 30 days. Failure to comply will result in a complaint
being filed in Salem District Court. If you have any questions, contact me directly. If
you feel you are aggrieved by this order, your appeal is to the Board of Building,
Regulations and Standards in Boston, Ma.
Serely,
Thomas St. Pierre

RE: t 265-267 Lafayette Street
= Dear Board Members:
After making a site visit to the above referenced property I
have determined that the existing second means of egresses are un-
acceptable. I would recommend exits, stairs, and connecting balconies
be installed at the rear of the property. This work would, of course,
have to be approved by the Historical Commission.
The Building Department upon receipt of your approval would then
issue a permit for the proposed work. We would require drawings by
an architect (y" scale) and must conform to Section 600.0 of the,
Massachusetts State Building Code, fourth edition.
If there are further questions, please don!,t hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
Stephen W. Santry
Assistant Building Inspector
