Gentlemen:
We are requesting relief from the building regulations described in 780 CMR—Sixth Edition 705.3 Openings
for a building renovation project at 90 Lafayette Street,Salem, MA.
Currently,the building is a two story structure with retail on the first floor and storage on the second.There
are a number of windows existing on the alley side of the structure.The proposed construction includes
retail use on the first floor and 5 stories of condominiums and parking above.
The design team proposes 4light wells to provide ventilation and light to some of the interior spaces,but
feels that the property would greatly benefit from additional windows on both sides of the building for
bedrooms and openings for the parking areas.The attached drawing shows both elevations for which relief
is requested.
We are offering the installation of additional sprinkler heads in the locations of these openings in order for
them to be protected.
We would like to ask you to consider this request,since it would result in a better,yet safe building.

I am in receipt of the preliminary drawings Cor the proposed project on 90 Lafayette
Sweet in Salem, Massachusetts. I have reviewed the documents and find that they do not
conform to the requirements of 780 CMR. Reference is made to the provisions of Article
705.3 Openings. Both side walls of the structure are at a fire separation distance of zero
feet. No openings are allowed in such walls. I recommend bringing this issue before the
State Building Appeals Board.
