Design of the System: The smoke control system uses two elements to control the movement of smoke, gases and flame in the stairway enclosure: 1. An 18-inch deep draftstop with close spaced sprinkler heads within 6" to 12" of the draftstop on the landing side of the stair. 2. An automatic pressurization system within each entire entire stair/landing enclosure. The system is designed to restrict the movement of smoke from the dwelling units into the stairwells and to restrict the movement of smoke, gases and flame up the stairs. The buildings are fully sprinklered using an NFPA 13 designed system. Each dwelling unit is separated from the adjacent spaces, including the stair enclosure lobby,with one-hour fire resistance rated construction and 20 minute self-closing doors. The floor construction is one-hour fire resistance rated.The attic floor/ceiling.provides a one-hour rated separation between the attic and the 3rd Floor. An 18-inch deep noncombustible draftstop at the bottom of the stair at the first and second floor levels.Within 6"to 12" of the draftstop face on the landing side are quick response residential sprinkler heads spaced no closer than 6 feet apart.The objective of this arrangement is to provide both a smoke, gas and heat reservoir to collect the heated products of combustion and to accelerate the operation of the sprinkler heads on the landing side of the stairway.The effect is to operate the sprinkler heads more quickly than they would normally operate when they are exposed to heated conditions on the landing side of the stair.The draftstop by itself will impede movement of the smoke and gases up the stair.The operation of the sprinkler heads will create a water curtain that acts as a barrier to smoke and gas movement up the stairs.The mechanisms for accomplishing this include cooling the smoke and gases to reduce their lift and wetting the actual smoke particles to reduce their buoyancy. 2. The stairway enclosure pressurization system will operate to provide two mechanisms for smoke control: A. The operation of the pressurization system will reduce the movement of smoke from the dwelling units into the stairway enclosure by creating a higher ambient pressure in the stair enclosure than in the dwelling unit.The dwelling unit is the most likely source and is assumed to be the primary source of smoke and heated gases entering the stairway. The operation of the pressurization system will restrict the movement of that smoke from the dwelling unit into the stair enclosure. B. The pressurization system relies on a supply of fresh air into the enclosure An automatic damper allows a limited volume of the air supplied to be exhausted while maintaining a pressure of 0.1 inches w.g. above ambient in the stairway enclosure.The supply air is introduced at the first floor level and exhausted at the 3rd Floor level.The supply air quantity is approximately 4,000 cfm,with the same amount-4,000 cfm-supplied separately to each stairway enclosure.The supply air provides a supply quantity equal to one air change per 2.75 minutes [volume of the stair enclosure is approximately 11,000 cubic feet].The actual rate of exchange of air depends on the amount of the air that is used to balance pressure losses due to open doors and leaks through doors, etc.The pressurization system itself will provide some smoke exhaust capability, although this is not the principal mechanism of controlling smoke and products of combustion movement in the stairway enclosure. C. The system is designed to operate on each stair enclosure within the building at the same time.The two stair enclosures within each building are separated by one- hour rated construction with two three quarter-hour rated doors connecting the two stair enclosures.The effect of the multiple partitions and doors is the equivalent of at least a two-hour separation between the two stairway enclosures. Duct Construction: The metal duct work providing the supply air to the first floor of the stair enclosure is enclosed within a one-hour rated assembly from the attic to the point of discharge on the interior. E. The exhaust fans for each stairway are located in the attic and separated from the 3rd Floor by a one-hour floor/ceiling assembly. The pressurization system is designed to operate when any of the following devices operate: 1. Sprinkler heads by activating the waterflow alarm device. 2. System smoke detectors in the stair enclosure. The system will not operate by activation of the manual pull stations. The system is provided with standby power adequate to operate both pressurization fans simultaneously. We believe that this system will significantly enhance the safety of the buildings and provide a safe egress environment. Accompanying this letter are plans for the system.
